There are 3 types of down syndrome:
•Trisomy 21
•Translocation Down syndrome
•Mosaic Down syndrome
Trisomy 21 is the most common, making up about 95% of all cases. It's where every cell in the body has three separate copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two.
Translocation is a rare form where an extra piece or whole copy of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome instead of existing as a separate, independent chromosome. It's the only type of down syndrome that can be inherited from a biological parent. It makes up 3-4% of all cases.
Mosaic is the most rare form, making up only 1-2% of cases. It's where a person has a mix of cells—some with the typical 46 chromosomes and some with an extra copy of chromosome 21.
