I don't understand Canadians carrying water for someone who has *initiated* aggressive talk of annexing Canada, imposing heavy tariffs and making Canada the 51st state on a continuous basis. I'm far from a Carney (or, god forbid, Trudeau) supporter, but... Wow. POTUS was 1st.

I'm no fan of Medicare for all but it will be fun to see the MAGA people who denounce it as a spending boondoggle but defend 5 grand for every adult as a great idea.

People need to actually read the 25th Amendment if they think it will be invoked now (or ever). It would require Vance and majority of the Cabinet to invoke the 25th, and likely require a 2/3 majority in both Houses of Congress if Trump disputes it. Neither is likely.

Are we so unserious as a country that a condolence video about a tragedy not being in both official languages is bigger news than the tragedy itself? It's beyond parody at this point.

If you are part of the health policy community you might want to check out a new book, Building Better Pharma Policy in Canada. The book examines the unintended consequences, opportunity costs, and the impact on patients, taxpayers, innovation, and trade relations – caused by misguided pharma policies. Building Better Pharma Policy in Canada, is available at Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Google Play, Apple Books, the Friesen Press Bookstore, and others. amazon.ca/Building-Better-Ph… books.friesenpress.com/store…

Just so everyone is aware, 90+% of Canadians oppose being annexed by the US, especially when espoused by the current US leader. Speaking against annexation revived the Liberals. If there's no talk of annexing Canada, the Liberals stay dead.

Trump team saying both that the economic fundamentals are strong and also that all the economic bad things happening are Biden's fault. All the while Trump's tariff wars are sending stocks plunging. tinyurl.com/2hpsfh5e tinyurl.com/4fetwhda

It's pure clown show now. 🤡 Tariffs that come in one day, get changed the next day, then get changed again the day after. All under false pretense with no rhyme or reason nor end in sight. Hard to do worse to sew chaos in the markets or future planning.

Just watched the entire Trump Zelensky press conference. Spectacular disaster for Trump (and Vance). The evasions to legitimate questions were astounding. The bullying at the end was appalling. Low point for US diplomacy.

How many more chances do repeat violent offenders get before meaningful change happens? Thanks to @TPS22Div Major Crime unit for re-arresting this individual. 397 total charges, including assault, assault with a weapon, dozens of break-and-enters, and multiple failures to comply. This is yet another example of why we need real bail reform NOW. tps.ca/media-centre/news-rel… @TPACallanan

It seems the Liberals will choose between Kim Campbell and Michael Ignatieff for their next leader. They will likely have the same success.

Tariffs and protectionism is bad when the US does it and bad when Canada does it. It's funny when @UniforTheUnion only worries about this some of the time while usually are all about protectionism.
The threat of tariffs on the automotive sector will be devastating. The parties have to find a way to get by their partisanship, start getting in bipartisan, wrap themselves, like I said, in the Canadian flag and defend Canada,” Stewart said. “We all have to be on the same page”

The impending U.S. pullout from the Paris Agreement will give low-income nations the opportunity to abandon a process that has clearly not served them, @vijramachandran and @TedNordhaus argue. foreignpolicy.com/2025/01/06…

1/12 With everyone talking about the Rotherham grooming gang scandals that were buried in the media, it is worth reminding the world that this didn't just happen in Rotherham. It happened all over the UK. Here is a list of many more such gangs which were allowed to operate:

Here is a diagram of the proposed system of dams and reservoirs proposed to provide flood control for Asheville - located in center of diagram (h/t reader Jack Brown). This was the project that was abandoned in the face of some local opposition. To be fair, it is my understanding that the wild rivers are very scenic, but the flood risk in the watershed was well known from the flood of 1916 and seemingly ignored by state and local governments. @Revkin also cites NYT article on development in North Carolina zones known to be at risk xitter.cf/Revkin/status/18418502….
Gift link to a vital NYT story by @cflav on how @NCgop state lawmakers and builders sustained the #expandingbullseye of flood-vulnerable homes in known danger zones (with @googleearth timelapse of some slope construction in North Asheville): "Over the past 15 years, North Carolina lawmakers have rejected limits on construction on steep slopes, which might have reduced the number of homes lost to landslides; blocked a rule requiring homes to be elevated above the height of an expected flood; weakened protections for wetlands, increasing the risk of dangerous storm water runoff; and slowed the adoption of updated building codes, making it harder for the state to qualify for federal climate-resilience grants." nytimes.com/2024/10/03/clima… Another reason why those here who've dropped @nytimes subscriptions might reconsider.

Javier Milei to the UN: "In this very house, that claims to defend human rights, they have allowed the entry of bloody dictatorships, like those of Cuba and Venezuela, without the slightest reproach. "In this very house, that claims to defend the rights of women, it allows countries that punish their women for showing skin, to enter the committee for the elimination of discrimination against women. "In this very house, there has been systematic voting against the state of Israel, which is the only country in the Middle East that defends liberal democracy, while simultaneously demonstrating a total inability to respond to the scourge of terrorism." I have a good feeling about the future of Argentina.
