For those that had always wondered about the Mission Control "beeps" in their comms with orbitals/lunar craft.
The Beep That Keyed the Transmitters The short tone that cuts the recordings of Apollo voice loops is not a courtesy beep and not a signal that the speaker has finished. It is a pair of pure sine waves generated in Houston and sent down the same voice circuit that carried the CapCom’s words. One tone, 2,525 Hz for 250 milliseconds, told the remote ground station to key its high-power transmitter. The second, 2,475 Hz for the same duration, told the station to release the key. Both tones rode inside the voice band so NASA did not have to lease a second long-haul circuit simply to switch the transmitters on and off. CapCom sat in Houston and used a push-to-talk switch exactly as a pilot or a radio operator would. The switch did not connect directly to a transmitter. The active station might be in Australia, Spain, or California, chosen by the rotation of the Earth and the position of the spacecraft. When CapCom pressed the button, the tone generator in the Mission Control voice system inserted the higher-frequency burst. Detectors at the distant station recognized the tone, closed a relay, and placed the uplink audio on the S-band transmitter aimed at the spacecraft. When CapCom released the button, the lower-frequency burst arrived and the relay opened. The astronauts’ own transmissions needed no such tones; their microphones keyed local transmitters inside the spacecraft or on the lunar surface. The equipment that generated and detected the tones was built by Quindar Electronics. The name stuck. The same arrangement had already been used on Gemini and remained in service on early Shuttle UHF voice circuits. Full-duplex operation meant both ends could transmit at once on separate frequencies, so the tones did not mark the end of a transmission in the way a repeater’s courtesy tone does. They simply marked the state of CapCom’s switch. Notch filters at the uplink sites removed most of the tones from the audio that reached the spacecraft, which is why the crews rarely heard them even though the tones are prominent on the ground recordings that were later released. Frank Borman once noted that the intro tone could clip the first syllable if CapCom began speaking before the remote relay had closed. The fix was procedural: wait a fraction of a second after keying. The system was never elegant. It was the cheapest reliable way to control transmitters scattered across the globe when every additional leased line carried a real cost. The two beeps therefore did exactly the work a local microphone switch would have done had the transmitter been in the same building.

This will be my second time riding out the west side of a storm named Isaias. Six years, 2 months and 5-6 days later. #isaias #hurricane

Update: This "Super El Niño" will be perhaps the strongest in 500 to 1000 years, and could legitimately be the most extreme global weather or climate event experienced by humanity since the invention of the printing press. Only more extreme situation is a volcanic winter.
The upcoming "mega El Niño" could be the strongest since the 1877 event that wiped out 4% of the Earth's population due to heat waves, drought and pestilence. Scientists watching every weather model update are getting "heart palpitations" ❤️

🚨Can confirm that 870 - WWL is currently off air here in New Orleans. It is unrelated to our tropical storm, there was planned maintenance scheduled to bring the transmitter offline at 1pm yesterday, the 21st. Well, it is now 7pm the 22nd and I don't know if they have been off-air this whole time or how long it will last, but might be worth a look this evening if they typically are block DX for you (like for me!) Here is the article from their website about planned maintenance: audacy.com/wwl/news/local/ww… #amdx #mwdx @WWLAMFM

Definitely wanting to get some analog TV DX soon!
A reminder that analog TV is still on the air in 2026. This clip is Cubavision on VHF Channel 6 from Havana, Cuba, received Sunday afternoon here in northeast Ohio via sporadic E.

If you compare these maps to what we are seeing on Bill Hepburn's tropo forecast, you can absolutely line up the hot spots for conditions this coming week. #fmdx #DXing @w2njl @AllanWeather @DXTVFM
Next week a NASTY heat ridge sets up in the heart of the grain belt. **IN-FACT IT COULD BE THE STRONGEST RIDGE THIS FAR NORTH WE HAVE EVER SEEN** Several nights in a row of 75+ for lows Several days of 100+ for highs As the ridge retreats look for the threat of a few nasty storm clusters as-well.

TROPO ALERT If you are an FM DXer in any of these states/provinces, you absolutely need to keep an eye out starting tomorrow night through next week at Bill Hepburn's tropo forecast. You have a chance for some very atypical Tropo thanks to the coming heat dome: Canada: southern SK and MB US: ND, SD, MN, IA, WI, MI, IL, IN, NE, KS, MO, OH Timing: Each location will see varying conditions between Sat and into Tues/Weds next week. Not all locations will see conditions the entire time, so consult Bill's forecast at the link below. Bands: Definitely keep an eye on FM broadcast, 2m ham radio and 162 MHz NOAA weather radio/AIS. Chances: This is a forecast and can very much change but given how strong the signaling is on the Heat Dome in the models, I would say this is pretty likely. Will the tropo extend into FM band? Again, who is to say, but the conditions look to be favorable. Why Is This Significant: This is an inland tropo event, in locations that typically do not see much Tropo, especially at the strengths forecasted so far. Our big heat dome in the Eastern half of the country produced some really significant inland tropo for folks last week. This could do the same! dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html @w2njl @DXTVFM @AllanWeather #fmdx #tropo #FM #radio #DX #DXing
