We started charting paint touches at NDSU in 24-25. Percent of possessions with a paint touch, as well as points per possession with and without.
67.5% of possessions had a paint touch, averaged 1.41 PPP with paint, 0.81 without.
1.20 PPP overall and 1st in D1 in 3FG%.
The best offenses track paint touches obsessively because most elite offense begins with collapsing defensive structure. A paint touch forces the low man to rotate, weak side defenders to stunt, and perimeter defenders to shift their positioning. One drive can trigger 3-4 defensive reactions before the ball is even shot.
This is why spacing matters so much. Dunker spot positioning, shake action, slot lifts, drift spacing, and relocation shooting all exist to punish help defense once the paint is touched. Basketball at the highest levels is often about forcing one defender to make two decisions simultaneously.

I asked Lakers coach JJ Redick about assistant coach Greg St. Jean, who is seen across the league as one of the standout assistants who could be next in line for a HC job.
“Jack of all trades, master of none.”
More from Redick on St. Jean, who is leading defensive efforts:

Players don't need more motivation on defense. They need fewer negotiations.
In 2006, researchers Peter Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran looked across 94 studies involving more than 8,000 people and found that simply wanting to do something wasn’t enough. People were much more likely to follow through when they decided ahead of time, “If this happens, I do this.”
I think about that a lot with defense because so much of what we call a motivation problem might actually be a clarity problem.
We tell players to play harder, be more aggressive, talk more, be locked in, and then we’re surprised when those intentions disappear once the game gets fast, chaotic, and tiring.
But if the ball gets driven, what exactly do I do? If my man catches the ball, what exactly does my closeout look like? Etc...
The more of those decisions we can make before the possession starts, the less the player has to negotiate in the middle of it.
Great defense shouldn’t require a motivational speech every possession. Sometimes the best way to create more motivated defenders is simply to give them more clarity.

One of my favorite defensive lessons from last season came from Miami:
Despite what analytic talk might convince you, giving up threes isn’t necessarily bad. Giving up the wrong threes is.
Miami gave up the 4th-most threes in the NBA…
…but ranked 4th in Defensive Efficiency.
How?
The league average last season was around:
• Open 3PT% ≈ 40%
• Contested 3PT% ≈ 33%
Miami ranked 2nd in contested threes. They weren’t eliminating the three-point line. They were changing the quality of the shots opponents got.
It we go further:
• Catch-and-shoot 3s ≈ 36.7%
• Off-the-dribble 3s ≈ 30%
Another drop off in efficiency. So great defense isn’t always about taking everything away. Often, it's about finding the winning edge in the margins.

Part 4 of Bombs Away is here. This one focuses on building an efficient man-to-man defense based on keeping teams out of the paint, preventing shots at the rim, and forcing turnovers.

Research on professional rugby players found that watching what they did wrong after a game led to elevated cortisol and worse performance the next game. Watching what they did well had the opposite effect, a bump in testosterone and better performance.
