President Trump says the economy is great. Americans, overwhelmingly, disagree. With early voting underway in the midterms, what does the data show? My answer, in three formats: Story: nytimes.com/2026/10/18/busin… Podcast: nytimes.com/2026/10/21/podca… Video: nytimes.com/video/business/1…

One way of checking the veracity of BLS jobs numbers is analyzing the ratio of payroll tax receipts per job. Faking the jobs numbers would require the Treasury Dpt. to also fake cash collections, a wide conspiracy to keep quiet. The ratio seems fine.

This is huge. A just-released SEC filing makes an extraordinary revelation: Mark Zuckerberg is getting ready to pay California’s 5% billionaire wealth tax and has signed an agreement to remain in California for 8 years. We are witnessing a global turning point unfold before our eyes. 🧵

Hillary Clinton: “The Republican Party is no longer a political party, it is a cult devoted to Trump and Trump’s power. The Republican Party needs a total transformation. If we’re gonna have a healthy government that actually gets things done and delivers for people, the Republican Party has to purge itself of everybody that lost both their conscience and their backbone over the last ten years and that’s most of them”

We are seeing a hunger disaster unrolling before our eyes. Since the GOP passed the Big Beautiful Bill, 2 million kids have lost food assistance. These are by far the deepest SNAP cuts in history, and each month, we find out it’s worse than we thought. The worst is yet to come.

AOC: One of the things that I find mind-boggling is that whenever we want to expand health care in this country, Medicare in this country, education, everyone’s first question in Washington is: How are we going to pay for this? Yet every single year, the United States Congress rubber-stamps trillions and trillions of dollars in current and expanded spending without anyone asking at all: How are we going to pay for this? By the way, the Pentagon has continued to fail every audit. They are paying for it with your health care and lack thereof. So it’s about time that we flip the equation and start asking, How can we afford war after war after war?

SCOOP: Major U.S. banks are detecting unauthorized third-party AI agents inside customer accounts, including some attempting to take actions that appear to be independent of user instructions, sources told Axios. The findings have alarmed banking executives, who are racing to restrict access to their systems as AI moves at a velocity faster than financial institutions can respond, multiple industry and bank executives told Axios. Several banks are now preparing for worst-case and even “day after” scenarios, including how to rapidly secure or restore customer accounts if things go wrong, the people said. Several bank executives told Axios they're struggling to distinguish between human users and AI agents. One executive said banks also struggle to determine whether agents are authorized by customers or potentially operating without their permission, more akin to rogue agent behavior. It is becoming increasingly clear that we no longer live in a democracy. The notion of extending this war, in coordination with Israel, with gas prices surging amidst a general affordability crisis is proof that this administration is not responding to the interests of the electorate, but instead is working at the behest of some other interests.

Nice story in NYT on the growing affordability crisis. My only nit was the takeaway, which failed to explore whether any of the price hikes in healthcare, concert tickets, skiing, or other industries assessed here could be attributed to monopolization or price fixing. The authors blame rising child care prices on workers (sigh), ignoring private equity roll-ups of child care centers.
