Following the publication of our phage gen paper, I wrote some personal thoughts on biosafety and biosecurity as generative biology improves.
Given the trajectory of progress, there should be concern and urgency -- but also optimism.

In new work, we lay out a vision for a high-level programming language for generative biology, called Proto.
Proto composes generative and predictive models spanning DNA, RNA, proteins, ligands, and their interactions, which we use to design complex biological functions. 1/n

Exciting breakthrough technology from the lab, now live in @CellCellPress ! Instead of cutting the genome where proteins bind (e.g., Cut&Tag), D&D-seq scars the DNA with a deaminase, allowing single cell genome mapping of TFs and chromatin remodellers!

I have long written and spoken about the many ways US immigration policy harms international students and scholars. This has been true for as long as I can remember, including when I first came to the US on a single-entry student visa more than 20 years ago under a process formerly known as muslim registry program.
But the current administration has gone much further, through arbitrary policy changes, travel bans, and broad visa processing pauses that leave folks unable to work, travel, or train.
These policies affect a minority of scientists, and in the current state of the world they can be easy to overlook. But we should not let that happen.
I wrote about the quiet loss of Iranian scientific talent in US labs for @TheScientistLLC:

The editors at Cell Systems asked: "How is agentic AI changing how we do science?" My response- it is exciting and already happening. But progress will depend on making agentic processes more trustworthy and accountable. The full Voices piece includes perspectives from several colleagues in the field. cell.com/cell-systems/fullte…

Evo 2 is now out @Nature. Congratulations to the Evo 2 team @arcinstitute and beyond! It was a ton of fun to work on this… and I personally learned so much!
Evo 2, our genome language model that generalizes:
- across biological prediction and design tasks,
- across all modalities of the central dogma,
- across molecular to genome scale, and
- across all domains of life,
is published today in @Nature.
Our new preprint “Learning lifetime disease liability reveals and removes genetic confounding in electronic health records” is now online! Link to paper: medrxiv.org/cgi/content/shor… This work is led by my postdoc @diyazheng_ and it’s our first project at @ETH_BSSE :)

For decades, the Iranian people have endured unimaginable oppression at the hands of a brutal dictatorship that has denied their humanity. We have been horrified at the reports coming out of Iran, including hospitals full of dead bodies—murdered by the regime—and protestors shot point-blank in the streets of Tehran and other cities.
But we have also been inspired by the resolve of Iranian activists, led largely by fearless women. Generations of Iranians have fought against the odds to establish a nation built on self-determination and human dignity, and it is our sincere prayer that this is the generation to achieve it.

California stands in solidarity with the people of Iran, who are confronting violent repression, mass internet and power shutdowns, and economic collapse imposed by a theocratic authoritarian regime.
The scale and persistence of protests across Iran demand fundamental change after decades of state violence and denial of basic rights.
In support of California’s Iranian community and in defense of universal human rights, we urge an immediate end to violence against civilians, the restoration of internet access, and respect for the Iranian people’s right to chart their own future.
