Having lived in both the US and Europe, I can absolutely attest to this.
I think the mistake people make is comparing gross salaries rather than the cost of replicating the same quality of life.
The US unquestionably offers greater earnings potential, particularly in certain professions. But once you factor in housing, healthcare, childcare, transport and, importantly, the value of your time, the equation changes quite dramatically.
And it’s not as though London is particularly cheap either.
But the broader point resonates. Once you’ve experienced a lifestyle where more of your time is genuinely your own, you start to appreciate that not everything can be solved by earning another $100k.
At some point, the marginal utility of another dollar is worth considerably less than the marginal utility of another hour with your family.
An interesting theme lately in the American expat community in Western Europe, especially higher earning corporate types (e.g. €200-300K/year), is the feeling of being unable to move back home to the US.
Few reasons...
Many who moved in the years after COVID sold their homes when rates were closer to zero than the rates now. Now that same home is ~20% more expensive while mortgage rates are 2x higher. So the monthly cost of housing like-for-like went up literally 100% in just 3-5 years.
They've gotten used to the European way of life (e.g. no or maybe just one car, easy train and airport access) and its far less intense commercial and career culture... so fewer working hours and more vacations and significant employee protections (i.e. hard to be fired legally).
This is great while living in Europe... a €250K household income is massive even post-tax considering the low relative cost of health care, education, transport, housing, etc...
...but dropping themselves back into US society... especially in a major metro area like NY, SF, Chicago, even Miami now... at age 40-50 with kids... is largely impractical.
Many Europeans would be shocked to learn that ~$250K/year in the US is incomparable to that same level of earnings in a major Western European city like London or Amsterdam or Paris.
I'd estimate the income needed in the US to match the overall quality of life you'd enjoy in one of those European cities... is around $500-750K/year.
Wild.

@BarstoolBigCat if you’re really going anti-Bidwill for Cards fans tomorrow, don’t forget he eliminated affordable end zone seats for stupid “casitas” in ‘24 and then last year created the now-empty “Casa Roja” at the visitor’s 50, 15k per. Hates the fans. azfamily.com/2025/04/09/ariz…

Rodriguez-era averages hit 48-51k in good years (like the 2014 Fiesta Bowl season). Sumlin’s 9-20 record and that 70-7 ASU loss did real damage—crowds plunged into the low 30s/40s and trust took years to rebuild. Tucson’s always been more basketball-first, and fans here need consistent wins plus decent kickoff times to pack the now-50k capacity stadium. Even this 5-1 start is drawing only ~41k so far.
Lmao party of “small government” mad at lack of boot licking.

I think Kenny’s biggest Achilles heel as a coach is that he’s loyal to a fault and boy are there a lot of faults with this team and coaching staff

Sun Devil Hockey has named Dave Hakstol as our head coach, bringing one of college hockey's most accomplished coaches to Tempe.

Got hit with a sudden $2,900 emergency room bill last month. called the hospital billing office to ask for an itemized breakdown before paying a dime.
rep on the phone said: 'sure, we can mail that out, but your account is currently coded under our uninsured hardship discount.'
two days later, the itemized bill arrives in the mail. the total jumped from $2,900 to $8,400.
i called back completely confused.
the rep calmly explained: 'requesting an itemized review removes the automatic hardship adjustment. you are now billed at our standard chargemaster rate.'
a $4,600 penalty just for asking to see what services were actually performed. healthcare pricing in this country is an extortion racket where demanding transparency triggers a financial attack.

This won’t be interim in the long run. Hakstol is going to be the permanent Arizona State coach and they just hit a grand slam over the previous coach who was a singles hitter.
