But by the time Telesat Lightspeed is actually built—if it ever is—Canada will already be left out of the communications, compute, and power stack that is being scaled right now Starlink went from 2.3 million users at the end of 2023 to 13.6 million after adding 1.6 million in the most recent quarter alone. Starlink Mobile is already at 22 million monthly users and grew 37% in Q3. New V3 satellites deliver a terabit per second each; Starship can launch 60 of them at a time. One recent flight added 26 terabits—more than eight times Viasat’s entire new fleet. At the end of 2025 the constellation had roughly 450 terabits; weekly (and eventually daily) Starship flights put it on a path to exceed the world’s total undersea-cable capacity. SpaceX is simultaneously ramping compute from 1.7 GW toward 2.5–3 GW by year-end and has said it is highly confident of adding 10+ GW next year, while building its own power capacity to support it. Major players are already contracting large blocks of that capacity Canada’s planned system is years away, government/enterprise-focused, and still needs SpaceX launches.
