EXCLUSIVE: Saturday morning, before the procession and the Mass at Saint Mary Major’s Basilica, we sat down with Bishop Athanasius Schneider.
In the interview we discuss how future harmony between the Society of Saint Pius X and Rome might be achieved. We also examine whether the 1986 Assisi interreligious meeting constitutes ordinary magisterium. Bishop Schneider explains why sedevacantism is wrong, and we reflect on the complex legacy of Pope Francis.
We asked other questions beyond these as well.
Join us as His Excellency offers his candid insights on these crucial questions facing the Church.

Well, another Cardinal has come out with a, shall we say, puzzling take on evangelization.
A few years ago, Cardinal Américo Aguiar, at the time auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, said that he and the other organizers of World Youth Day in his hometown had no interest in converting anyone to Christ.
Now Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco of Algeria has opined that “the Church is not there to convert” and “Christians should approach other religions through fraternity rather than seeking conversions.”
Excuse me, but…what?
Last time I checked, the Founder said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Sure sounds like conversion to me.
When St. Paul came to Corinth or Athens or Thessalonica, his purpose was not to listen or to form a discussion group but rather to declare an unnerving message: the euangelion (glad tidings) that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.
So impassioned is he for this work that he says, “I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:22); and “If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:16)!
Moreover, the entire thrust of the Second Vatican Council was toward bringing the Light of Christ to the peoples of the world (Lumen Gentium). And this missionary élan has given rise in the last few decades to the idea of a “new evangelization,” which is to say, a fresh declaration of the Lordship of Christ.
Quite obviously, no one thinks that this work of evangelization should be done in a brow-beating, overbearing, or disrespectful manner (proselytization), but for God’s sake, let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
If I really thought that the Church does not exist to bring people to Christ, then I would resign and get an honest job.
Oh well… and Panama Bishops are worried about Veils and kneeling at mass.

LATEST: Cardinal Vesco says the Catholic Church is “not there to convert”
The Archbishop of Algiers said: “We are the Church of this people. Not a proselytising Church, not a Church that is there to convert, but a Church that aspires to be one of the components of this people.”
He called proselytism “poison” because it treats another person’s religion as false, and argued Christians should choose fraternity over seeing themselves as a “besieged fortress.”

It’s a pity with these multi faith events that the name of Jesus is excluded from the event. We will never have true peace without Christ. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” The Pope is the Vicar of Christ.

It's not a "misrepresentation" by me. I said the event at the basilica was already planned and the Vatican gave multiple solutions. The pilgrimage organizers knew this long ago, and yet maintained " Mass at Saint Peter's" on their website. Edward says the Vatican event went "public" after the organizers made the request. This does not mean it wasn't already on the Vatican schedule. Maybe you don't live here and know how the Vatican works. These things are planned long in advance. I've been doing this for over 20 years. The Vatican gave the option to do the Mass another day or use Saint Mary Major on the original day requested. A simple solution. As I wrote in my post, I am a regular at TLM in Rome. Cardinal Burke is a friend and my neighbor. I love this annual pilgrimage. But this was not an attack, it was scheduling.

Just a note: Pope Leo never said the nodule was "small". That word was inserted into the Vatican's English translation of his remarks but does not appear in the original. Speaking in Italian, the Pope said: "i medici mi hanno trovato un nodulo circoscritto al polmone." [the doctors found a nodule confined to my lung.]
