Chiricahua National Monument has officially been redesignated as a national park, becoming America’s 64th national park. Known as the “Wonderland of Rocks,” this spectacular Arizona landscape was shaped by massive volcanic eruptions and years of erosion, creating the towering rock pinnacles that define Chiricahua today.

Only three full moons left in 2026! 🌕✨ October's Hunter's Moon will light up the sky this Sunday, with Saturn nearby and a chance to spot a few lingering Orionid meteors. Plus, the final two full moons of the year will be supermoons! bit.ly/4yzk2EY

Yesterday’s bone density scans. This DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) machine uses low dose X-rays to measure bone density and body composition. Without the loading signal of gravity, our bones will leach calcium in space, which can lead to significant losses in bone density. This is why it is so important for us to exercise in space. Thanks to lots of weight lifting on the @Space_Station, the preliminary results show that the bone density in my spine actually increased in space!

Interestingly, at 6:59 p.m., the rotational velocity of the Overgaard, Arizona storm was commensurate with what historically has had a median of EF3 strength (for observed tornadoes). There's no doubt this tornado was EF2+. Likely had higher damage potential south of town too.

Anger arising during a miserable summer doesn't necessarily fade just because temperatures cooled. The French protests began a month ago led by students upset about the poor conditions in public schools. Among many complaints, one is the excessive heat. time.com/article/2026/10/02/…

Does extreme heat necessarily lead to rioting? No, of course not. But prolonged heat makes people miserable, and that can enflame existing tensions arising out of poverty, inequality, perceived injustice, etc. Heat isn't the main issue, but it can intensify existing problems.

The riots in France have multiple complex economic and social causes, but I have to wonder whether the scorching hot summer contributed some to the discontent. In a country where most homes and businesses lack air conditioning, this last summer would have been insufferable.

There's no doubt climate stresses are adding stress to various aspects of our lives, especially in certain places, whether it be economic, health, anger, anxiety, etc... As with spikes in migration it is typically a mix of many factors, and unfortunately it is very hard to parse out how much each contributes individually. For example: We never go to the grocery store and wonder if climate stresses are partially to blame for why certain goods have spiked in price. We should. Because in many cases it is reality.
