When they read your domain name, it says a lot. What it says, however, is up to you. 🧵👇

Buyer your perfect domain name is strategy not vanity.
The domain is really free because of how it increases conversion, trust and profit.
Think about it...

Last week I acquired the domain name operations.com.
For years I see most companies that I’ve helped build and scale limited not from starvation but indigestion.
The inability to run the operational side of their business.
My former head of operations is coming to be the partner in the business and at first we’re doing an education play, which will turn into a media play and eventually a software play.
Specifically focused on businesses doing under $10M in revenue in scaling and eventually expanding beyond this place in partnership.
The deal happened in 4 days from its inception.
How did it start?
My head of operations said it was time for him to do his own thing after working with me for 12 years.
I agreed.
He said as a joke…
How cool would it be to buy operations.com.
I said…
Why not reach out?
He did.
And now the rest is history in the making.
He’s been wanting to do his own thing for years.
He’s been dreaming about the domain for 3 years.
Moral of story?
That thing you want to do?
Go for it.
He simply asked me.
And said screw it. Let’s do it.
There’s plenty of people in the world looking to help with that thing you’ve been dreaming of.

Your domain name is the cornerstone of your brand's online identity.
It's the first encounter people have with your business, setting the tone for their experience.
A domain name can be a powerful asset or a significant liability.

I love what the family team at GOAT Foods is doing with the power of one-word generic domains (goatfoods.com)
They have launched:
Pretzels .com
Chocolate .com
Licorice .com
Caramels .com
Taffy .com
and are pre-launch with:
Cashews .com
Cupcakes .com
and
Truffles .com
They understand what you can do with a category-defining domain and then multiplying that power across an entire category horizontally
Perfect and I can’t wait to see what’s next

😂 Tell me you don’t understand domain names, without telling me that you don’t understand domain names.
So part of your business is printing things . . . and you own Printing.com . . . and you decided to switch to Nettl.com and sell off Printing.com for $2.2m to a likely competitor? trying to wrap my head around that one research-tree.com/newsfeed/a…

I previously documented that the Shift.com domain name was acquired for $385,000 in 2015, as per:
dnjournal.com/archive/domain…
This bankruptcy auction is a reminder that elite domain names are assets. Even if a business fails, these assets can be liquidated, sometimes even for more than they were acquired.
Just Blogged: Shift[.]com and Fair[.]com domains change hands for $1,365,000 and $900,000 respectively in bankruptcy auctions

Except for one .ORG and one .TV, all of the other SuperBowl ads showed .COM as their online brand (there were 15+ when I stopped counting).
However, there were ads that showed no online brand. Corporate marketing never ceases to amaze me with their incompetence.

I ran a little experiment that I want to tell you about...
I used to think buying a premium dotcom domains were a waste of cash.
I’d hear stories of people spending $500k on a dotcom domain and would silently laugh to myself.
If only you spent that money on paid ads, viral videos etc. That 500k might be 100k customers!
You're just lighting the cash on fire for ego.
But I was wrong... I recently started actually acquiring some dope domains.
So, I ran an experiment.
What if I took the same product and slapped on a new premium dotcom domain. A dot co for a dot com.
And I started seeing the conversion rates jump 2-3x
Same EXACT product, just a new domain, more customers.
Pretty wild. But the dotcom adds trust and organic search.
And some of these domains were under $10,000, not talking just $1M domains.
Very short payback periods.
So, yeah my realization is premium domains can be totally worth it especially in B2B.
I'm starting to think about only starting companies that have premium domains...
Brand matters more than ever.
