Braved the heat to be out campaigning for the excellent @bevcraig today in Bury.
I've worked with Bev over many years and she will be a brilliant Mayor. She has been a big supporter of our plans to regenerate our town centres and grow our borough to the benefit of all!
It was great to sit down with the MEN yesterday to talk about my plans for Greater Manchester, starting with free bus travel for 11-18 year olds 🐝

Great to meet with the Chancellor @RachelReevesMP alongside @Eamonn_OB, Leader of Bury Council, to discuss our ambitions for Bury town centre and Bury North.
We made the case for future growth funding and highlight the huge potential of our communities. Positive discussions about how we can unlock investment, support local jobs, and deliver opportunities for residents.
Looking forward to continuing to work together to secure the investment our area deserves.

Bus usage in Greater Manchester has increased by five million journeys (155m to over 160m) since franchising.
At the same time GM is reducing fares and expanding frequency of its trams; its use has increased from 42m to 46m journeys too.
It’s the start of reversing the decline accelerated after deregulation, and recovering the hit from Covid.
It’s a shame it’s being used by one mayor to criticise another. The focus should be for every area to get the investment and improvement it deserves.

In Bury, we bucked the national trend and outperformed much of Greater Manchester, resisting the scale of political shift seen elsewhere across the region and the country. While Labour lost ground in other parts of Greater Manchester and Reform performed strongly in many Labour areas, Bury delivered a different result.
It may be too soon and overstated to offer it as a good example to follow but the exception is worthy of noting. Reform can be beaten back.
In Bury North, only Conservative-held wards switched to Reform, and one was a defection earlier in the campaign, reinforcing the point that Reform’s advance was strongest where the Conservatives switched or collapsed rather than where Labour stood strong, present and reliable in our community.
Where Labour won off the Tories in Bury North, this felt like the electorate understanding the threat to the one-time all one-nation Remain Tory ward and so they did the best thing to defeat Reform there, and voted Labour.
Labour still faced real challenges, with the Workers’ Party taking a seat from Labour, abetted by the Green vote. Despite the only Labour loss Labour still finished ahead of Reform who were a close third in a busy field.
Ultimately, Reform will be only the second-largest opposition party on Bury Council, as the independent Radcliffe First group remains the official opposition to the Labour-led, Labour-retained council.

Greater Manchester is pioneering a new model of growth - the first of its kind in the UK.
The GM Good Growth Fund will lend where the market won’t, keep more wealth within the city-region and lift all people and places.

In the last decade, GM has been the UK’s fastest-growing city region.
We are now ready to go further in the next with a plan for good growth, lifting all people and places.

The real test of good growth is whether every person and every place feels the benefit. It’s about improving lives by creating new opportunities and broadening access to them.
Watch the video to see how our new £1bn GM Good Growth Fund will deliver this.
You can read here why @BellaSankey and I will be backing @LucyMPowell in the Deputy Leadership contest.
Bury and Brighton represent the places where we need to hold together Labour's voter coalition. As a full-time deputy, Lucy will bring all her experience and focus to this.
"If we are to reshape out political strategy so it responds to the perspectives we hear on the doorstep, we need a deputy leader that has the time to make this task her singular focus"

Really enjoyed @LGA_Labour hustings last night & delighted to have picked up so much support afterwards.
From Brighton to Bury, Labour must reconnect with its base. Thanks to @BellaSankey & @Eamonn_OB for setting out why they're voting for me.

Two signs outside my Church tonight in Kersal/Prestwich, offering solidarity and support to our Jewish neighbours at this difficult time.
Terror and hate must not be allowed to divide all people of goodwill!
Always good to be out on the doorstep, having conversations about the big issues of the day and picking up local casework for us to work on.
Also an opportunity to share the great progress being made on the regeneration of Prestwich Village!

We’re proud of the achievements of all our young people. 👏🏻
To help with the next stage of the journey, we’re launching a half-price monthly bus pass for 18 to 21 year-olds from 1 September. 🐝
So aim high and get ready to go as far as you can! 💪🏻
There is no place for antisemitism in our borough, so I welcome the action taken here.
This shocking incident is sadly one in a long line of divisive and hateful moments from this organisation. It is positive that so many people in Bury reject them.
