How can we build a more sustainable future for people and nature? 🌿
Biosphere reserves are already showing the way.
Across the world, 797 biosphere reserves act as living laboratories for sustainable development, helping communities protect biodiversity and sustain their livelihoods.
On the International Day for #BiosphereReserves, @UNESCO invites everyone to learn from the practices already in place in these sites, and to work towards development that goes hand in hand with respect for nature.

🌱 When we think about carbon and climate, we look up. But the bigger story is under our feet.
The world's soils hold more carbon than all the world's trees and the atmosphere combined. But when drained, burned or otherwise disturbed, they can become a major source of emissions.
Between 2016 and 2024, disturbed soils released approximately 3.9 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases per year, nearly equivalent to the combined 2024 fossil fuel emissions of India and Saudi Arabia.
Learn more about where soil carbon is being lost, what's driving those losses and where it is beginning to recover in our latest Insights piece.

Carbon dioxide accounts for two thirds of the warming effect on our climate from GHGs, followed by methane and nitrous oxide. The WMO community also monitors other long-lived gases of potential concern, highlighting the need for continuous observations.
