Here is a beautiful list! 125 free math textbooks, written by the mathematicians who teach the courses and shared on their own university pages. No sign-up, no paywall, no pirated copies. From high school algebra to graduate analysis. 👇

A quick reminder of the 2024 election: if you refuse to vote because you don’t want to vote for the lesser of two evils, you will usually wind up with the greater of two evils.
#vote.

Wow this is beautiful!! I'm definitely going to check out limerse more when I get a chance.
But basically, my philosophy on education is the following: the better AI gets at everything, the more value we'll get from *not* that, meaning from human interactions. I want to help create communities, not push people more and more onto screens that they stare at alone in their rooms.
This is especially poignant in the Math Corps. We see kids come in on Day One who are used to coming to school and sitting in the corner alone, doom scrolling on their cell phones. We don't allow cell phones (kids are instructed to put them away in their backpacks on arrival and not take them out until dismissal), and put out a bunch of breakfast and board games. By Day Three, kids are *begging* their parents to get them to camp right when the doors open, so they get a coveted seat at the Monopoly table. The high school TAs become big brother / big sister to the kids; everybody's making eye contact, joking around, hugging their friends in the morning. There's no way I'm adding a screen to that scenario!.. (Again, I'm a tech-loving Luddite!)
Conversely, if you already have a great social life, a family, friends, a good job, etc, and you want to learn more math? Get a Math Academy or limerse or whatever else subscription and get calculating!

@AlexKontorovich Also curious to hear your thoughts on limerse.com which is a visually immersive learning platform (starte with Calculus with other subjects coming soon)

Your conversation with Thomas Koberda was fantastic, and I've also been enthusiastically recommending it to people. It definitely says much more than I did here!

I’m very opinionated. So it’s nearly impossible for me to hear someone’s arguments and *not* find something I disagree with. (This includes reading things I myself wrote years - or weeks - ago.) And yet the amazing Grant Sanderson @3blue1brown has put out a long, detailed video on the future of mathematics, in which I cannot find a single flaw. I’ll be sending this to every PhD student and postdoc I know, and strongly recommend everyone watch it.

(Of course I tried to say many of the same things in my conversation with Thomas Koberda. But Grant’s version, unsurprisingly, does an infinitely better job at communicating those ideas!)

- First full-time job came from a contact via my internship and mentor at the time.
- Second full-time job came via social media network and relationship.
- Current full-time job came via network and freelance relationships.
This is true.
Nearly 60 journalists who recently landed positions in a new newsroom explained how to get a job right now. Most of them had the same advice: You need to network more.

Regardless of what people tell you about recapturing and all that stuff, taxpayer-funded stadiums never work out for the citizens. It just makes the richer teams get valuable real estate and revenue. Go read the economic papers about it; it does not work.

When people complain about not using their brains because of AI, I have to wonder whether they’ve really used AI.
You don’t use your brain for the same tasks as before, but you certainly have to use your brain.
How do I describe what I want? How can I tell if it’s correct? …

The same people who think this is okay want the Ten Commandments displayed in schools, demand books be banned for graphic content, and accuse teachers of indoctrinating students.
But livestream an execution? Apparently, that’s perfectly fine.
BREAKING: The Pentagon says it will livestream the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan. apnews.com/article/fort-hood…
ok, my "research" says FC Dallas (Burn) do, in fact, lead MLS in the weird catagory of "MLS SACK ASSIST"
10 times has a MLS manager lost/left their gig after last playing FCD. Weirdly, twice ('17 & '19) it was draws!
DC United is 2nd w/ being this team 8 times

Homeschooling a five-year-old has made it increasingly clear to me that moving away from memory work was an absolute disaster for education: doing memory work *increases the ability to remember stuff in general, which makes learning faster!*

I was part of a group that met last week to try to propose recommended changes to the structure of math PhD programs in an age of AI. Our report, together with a collection of related resources, is now available here:

In 1991, a trio of unheralded high schoolers - two of them younger than Cavan Sullivan is today - appeared for the USMNT. Two of them would never do so again. Their story has been lost to time.
I spoke to all three of them, on the Guardian:

24 senior mathematicians met at Harvard and agreed on something big:
A PhD should no longer be awarded mainly on the dissertation text. Their reason is that AI can now help write it. They want in-person, written, and oral exams instead.
Personally, as someone with a PhD, I think the defense should have been the real test all along. Anyone can polish a document.

It's important to learn math not because you may need to do long division as an adult, but because it promotes rigorous thinking. IMO, history and causal inference are among the most important subjects a young person can study — math being central to the second.
A significant problem in public discourse right now is people's inability to critically evaluate causal claims (e.g., vaccines cause autism, deporting immigrants will solve the housing crisis, etc.). The less able people are to critically evaluate causal claims, the worse our democracy functions because people can be preyed upon for votes. You should promote anything that improves rigorous thinking, even if it doesn't have market value. In fact, we should stop thinking of education only in the context of what improves the economy.
IMO, this is distinct from knowing your own address (which Huang can avoid because he's wealthy). Memorizing facts like this may or may not be important, but it's distinct from rigorous thinking.
HUANG: “.. Try getting a kid to do long division right now. Multiplication tables are starting to be forgotten. Doing square roots? My goodness. ..
.. Does it matter? .. I don’t think it does.”

Take a break from AI and read this fun post by master teacher @garyrubinstein -- it's the story of the "pons asinorum", the first tricky proof in Euclid's Elements. So much fun, with very conversational writing, and brilliant explaining and stories. geometrycurriculum.wordpress…
