Joy means that the mechanism for monitoring/policing yourself for the comfort of others no longer takes priority.
And when being yourself is so often a "wrong" way to be, being yourself without surveilling/"mitigating" yourself can feel perilous.

To feel joy, you have to be in yourself and in the moment. You're not worried about how you appear to others. You can't be both hypercritical of your existence while also reveling in it.

One of the cruelest things about Autistic/ADHD masking is that you learn to treat positive emotions as a warning sign that you're about to do something "wrong" and that it is therefore "safest for everyone" if you maintain a constant, low-key negative internal emotional state.

In June 2017 41% of disabled people in #Grenfell died.
5.5 years later, disabled residents face the same nightmare as they did then. Ordered to stay put with no means of escape, they do not stand a chance. A stark reminder that Government treats disabled people as secondary.

CN: fire, death, systemic ableism….
The gov is proposing only disabled people in ‘high risk’ buildings get evacuation plans, despite these being a recommendation of the #GrenfellInquiry. Neither #Lakanal or #Grenfell were identified to be ‘high risk’ before the fires.

Today is #RareDiseaseDay where I and many others are known to talk about our disabilities and conditions.
This got me thinking about the natural expectation people have about knowing other people’s’ experiences so here are some top tips when wanting to ask... #RareDiseaseDay

ALT When wanting to ask someone about their disability or condition… Always - Ask - do you mind talking about this? Think - why do you need to know this information? Never - Assume it’s ok to ask personal questions because you have good intentions and want to learn more Remember - Sharing experiences about disability can be deeply personal and is not always a casual conversation
