Our newest paper announcing the discovery that some #Neanderthal DNA appears to be playing important roles in autism - nature.com/articles/s41380-0… #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #actuallyautistic 🧬🧬🧬
A planned public execution? That’s disgusting and contemptible. There’s so much wrong with that I don’t even know what to say. It’s official: The Trump administration has officially broken my brain.

Just devastating. The oldest natural history museum in America will suddenly close its doors at the end of the month.
With budget cuts, flagging govt and political support, high overhead costs...I fear this fate may befall many of us.

17,600 NIH-funded research projects have gone dark.
These projects were active in FY'24 with an end-date well into 2025/6 or beyond. But they received $0 in both FY’25 & FY’26
Together, they represent $7.6 billion in previously funded science.
No IC was spared:
▪️Half of AHRQ’s portfolio is gone (54%)
▫️ 1.6k ageing research worth $831M stalled at NIA
▪️NCI lost 2k+ projects worth $696M
Money simply stopped flowing. PIs have no idea why.
All of this is happening on the backdrop of new political "screenings" & admin delays on approved, peer-reviewed NIH grants (@nature article in first comment).
Each missing project is an interrupted question, a destabilized team, and years of work now at risk.
Science does not thrive in administrative limbo.

Our new study suggests that females seem to contribute more to rising incidents of autism than males over the past decade. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

"The modern expansion of the autism spectrum was characterized by the identification of females and adolescents—groups historically marginalized by male and child-centric diagnostic models—and a postpandemic rebound in detection" jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…
Our recent JAMA paper from our collaborative group at @SLU_Official, reporting that much of the rise in #autism diagnosis over the last decade seems to come from females, especially adult women. #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticWomen #LateDiagnosedAutistic

Interesting meta-scientific take on the development of theories, as exemplified by the case of paleontology in the Modern Synthesis and the specific Late Turkana mollusk study of the punctuated equilibria.

While not a slam dunk, this study shows it’s mathematically possible: Neandertals may have simply been assimilated. nature.com/articles/s41598-0…

Our humanity is best fulfilled when we exist and live together, when we succeed in experiencing authentic, informal bonds with the people around us. If we close in on ourselves, we risk growing sick with loneliness, or even narcissism, which leads us to care for others only out of self-interest. #GeneralAudience

Again, the theme of toxicity of environments in shaping macroevolution, gains momentus. This time in the hominid evolution!
"...hominids were consistently exposed to lead over 2 Ma, contradicting the idea that lead exposure is solely a modern phenomenon"
