Controversial take: “Ultra” is relative.
For a 5K runner, a marathon feels like an ultra.
For a road marathoner, 60K with 3,000m of climbing feels like an ultra.
For an ultrarunner, 60K is just another race.
Same sport. Different limits.
Is ultra really about distance?
Those paddles are pure evil 😈😀🙈💪🏻 planing a @otillorace next year hopefully 🤞🏻
Norseman ballot outcome for me ,as it was first time I entered it … quite predictable 🤷🏼♂️ My appetite after ÖtillÖ World Championship in 2023 is growing on me to try something new. @Dad__Miles how it went for You ?

For years, cold-water immersion (CWI) has been debated in sports science. Some argue that it hinders adaptation by blunting inflammation, while others swear by its benefits for faster muscle recovery—especially when used strategically. But here’s what’s often missing in these discussions: most studies focus on men.
This new randomized controlled trial finally puts the spotlight on women and brings fresh insights into how CWI impacts recovery in female athletes. The study examined the effects of five consecutive days of cold-water immersion (14°C for 15 minutes) after exercise-induced muscle damage in the hamstrings—and the results are worth paying attention to.
Findings:
- Strength recovered faster – Participants who used CWI regained their hamstring strength quicker than those who didn’t.
- Reduced muscle soreness – Perceived muscle pain and soreness decreased significantly, making it easier to stay active.
- Lower markers of muscle damage – Blood biomarkers related to muscle breakdown were lower in the CWI group.
Here’s the Debate:
Critics of CWI argue that suppressing inflammation post-exercise could reduce long-term adaptations—essentially slowing down muscle growth and endurance improvements. But this study suggests that timing matters. Using CWI strategically—after intense or damaging sessions—could enhance recovery without interfering with adaptation over time.
For female athletes, this is particularly important because hormonal differences can affect muscle repair rates, inflammation, and recovery speed. Since most research is done on men, studies like this help bridge the gap and give science-backed strategies tailored for women.
So, should women be using cold-water immersion for recovery? If the goal is faster recovery between sessions, this study strongly suggests it’s a valuable tool. But if long-term muscle gains are the priority, it’s important to consider when and how often it’s used.

Data from 120,000 runners shows that slow and fast marathoners do essentially the same amount of medium and hard training, but vastly different amounts of easy training.
But does that really mean that slow marathoners would get faster by training easier?

This is sad.
