How can global updates be this far apart? In the UK, the MHRA has just strengthened warnings on SSRIs for suicidal thoughts/behaviors and persistent sexual dysfunction (PSSD). Risks that "are not new," they say — after years of patient pressure. Meanwhile in Australia, the PBAC (Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee) is pushing to lift prescribing restrictions and expand PBS subsidies so more antidepressants can be handed out for a wider range of uses. Wider net. More access. Same drugs. One country slowly admits the risks and tightens the messaging. Another widens the net and makes them cheaper and easier to prescribe. UK MHRA: "Hey, maybe we should finally warn people properly that SSRIs can cause suicidal thoughts and lasting sexual dysfunction. Risks aren’t new, apparently." Australia’s PBAC: "Cool story. Let’s make them cheaper and easier to prescribe for more things." www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/pro…

The standard warning on antidepressants assumes people can calmly call their doctor if they feel the urge to end their life. Many can’t. The drug can create a sudden, overwhelming drive that feels like an implanted mission, even when someone has planned ahead. These are antidepressant-induced deaths. The entire covid saga summed up in less than 2.5 mins. Absolutely on the money, and hilarious AF 😭👌🏻⚡️

It took an expert review and sustained patient pressure to get this far. The same regulator that has long downplayed or slow-walked these issues now says the risks "are not new." Will it actually change how these drugs are handed out, or just give the MHRA an opportunity to say, "Well, we did all we could"? gov.uk/drug-safety-update/an…

5 years ago today, I flew from Panama to the UK to be with my dying father. The UK government put me in a "quarantine" hotel due to covid restrictions. I broke out. Less than 24 hours later, I watched as my father slipped away. Miss you, pops.

If Citeh are demoted to Championship, League One or Two, won't that put teams in those leagues at a disadvantage? #ManCity #115charges #PremierLeague

Pharma-funded AFSP getting airtime again. Local news: loss survivors have a higher suicide risk. Article promotes AFSP. (Widening the net at every opportunity.) No mention of the drugmakers who’ve backed this outfit for years. No mention of akathisia. AFSP have downplayed that before. Sudden death after a brain pellet increase? Depression, they've said. Not the drug. Are they a suicide prevention group or an agent for the industry? myhighplains.com/news/suicid…

Alberta court just signed off on a $7.5m Paxil birth-defect payout. - GSK still won’t say the drug did it. - Lawyers still take their cut. - The kids still have the defects. - Same old Paxil routine. - Settle. Deny. Move on. If the evidence was that weak, they wouldn’t keep writing the cheques. canadianlawyermag.com/practi…

Whenever I see the words "FDA Approved," my first thought isn’t safety. It’s that someone at the agency has just been slipped a bulky envelope.

Psychiatric Times "debunking" misleading claims about brain pellets. Small trial effects get dressed up as a public-health success, withdrawal is not addiction, and they wave off suicide risk in adults with population averages. Same shit, different day. psychiatrictimes.com/view/de…

Widening the net catches more fishes.
We've gone from 106 diagnoses in the DSM in 1952 to nearly 300 today. Did humans suddenly develop 200 new ways to be mentally ill? Or did the psychiatric industrial complex develop 200 new ways to profit from convincing you your personality is a disease?
