It's taken me a while, but I'm finally ready to announce that I completed my PhD earlier this year!!!

I've just come up for workshop this morning around being black and working, and Black academics are really scared right now and I don't think the press understands the consequence of what they have done for others

What an awful, and terribly predictable, tragedy.
The original charge against Jason Arday was that he had plagiarised another academicās work in his PhD. He denied it, Liverpool John Moores University investigated, and it upheld the award of the doctorate. That should have been the end of it.
But the witch hunt simply moved on: to his charity fundraising, to his long-distance running, to details of his early life, none of which had anything to do with his academic career.
Whatever Jason Arday did or didnāt do, which other professor has been subjected to this level of forensic public investigation? Academia is not exactly short of embellished CVs and creative grant applications. But as far as this countryās institutions and media are concerned, the rules are different if youāre black.
This is the reality of liberal white supremacy. A young black professor gets appointed, and Cambridge congratulates itself for being wonderfully progressive (of course not acknowledging this as the result of decades of mass anti-racist struggle). But itās only a loan and can be taken away at any time, on the basis of an overtly racist press campaign designed to undermine the legitimacy of all non-white intellectuals and send a message to all young black people: you are not as good as us, and youāre only here under sufferance.
Racism killed Jason Arday. As capitalism moves deeper and deeper into long-term crisis and as living conditions continue to deteriorate, white supremacism will play an increasingly important role for the ruling class, dividing the oppressed and isolating those communities that are least invested in imperialism. This is the trajectory ā unless we do something about it.

As one of the few black academics in the UK, I can say with certainty that many of us are struggling with our mental health and that this devastating moment might be very triggering for some. Please speak out to someone, dont be alone with your thoughts right now @samaritans
Suicide is highly contagious. It triggers copycat deaths across both time & space. Especially if reported sensationally.
Please share these guidelines from the Samaritans on how to responsibly report on suicide. They apply also to social media.
Young people are particularly vulnerable.
RIP Jason Arday. You were failed by so many including the media. Please donāt let this awful awful tragedy lead to more tragedy.

Black people, please look after yourselves on social media and in real life. Do that in whatever way helps you. Block, delete, disengage and limit replies. Find a safe space. Have conversations with people who genuinely care

We are told to be twice as good to get half as far. Nobody talks enough about what happens once you get there.
You become hypervisible. Your credentials are examined differently. Your mistakes acquire racial meaning. Your humanity is conditional on continuing to be exceptional.

How did we go from plagiarism accusations to him ālying about his lifeā????
Though I didn't personally know Professor Jason Arday, his passing is truly devastating. Since when did the media or people outside of academia care this much about issues such as alleged plagiarism? I don't want to hear a single person say this country isn't racist, it's tiring.

A profound loss for education, academia, and the ongoing work of advancing Black history and representation. š
Jason Arday, whose scholarship and advocacy helped shape important conversations around race, equality, and education, played a significant role in developing one of our first reports for the Black Curriculum. His commitment to creating a more inclusive future will not be forgotten.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, students, and everyone whose lives he touched.
Rest in peace, Professor Jason Arday. šļøāØ

Please Black academics, be careful in engaging in spaces at this moment. Please prioritise curated spaces with trauma informed practitioners where the focus is on practical steps to take and available resources . Prioritise your wellbeing.

It's not just Arday.
Check the comments they write about Black Teenagers who got all As in A level.
Check how British media writes about Rashford/Saka vs. how they write about Jack Grealish and other White players who "flopped". Check how they talk about Black doctors and nurses who committed an offense vs. how they talk about the Whites who did the same.
The only wife most people remember her name in the British Royal Family is Megan.
You are not permitted to notice a pattern or ask why. You'll be accused of trying to use "race to dodge accountability."

As someone who has experienced a smear campaign, I can tell you with full certainty that it can take you into total darkness.
They forget they are dealing with a human being. They forget it is someone's entire life they are tearing apart.
This is what sinister journalism does.
Shame on the British media.

Black people need to accept that weāre moving toward pure, unadulterated racism that canāt be rationalised with. Theyād rather see us suffer or dead than see us simply existing, living normally. Nothing matters to them⦠not your grades, your experience, your work. Even with proof in front of them, they wonāt believe it, because they donāt think you deserve it.
Yesterday several Black kids posted their A-Level results and suddenly itās āDEI.ā In Britainā¦.where exams are marked blind and DEI has nothing to do with any of it. Even when you work hard, theyāll tell you that you did not.
I would love to continue to develop my understanding and research in this field, as I believe it is important to foster an environment that encourages children to explore physical activity, both in and out of school.
