We have refused to submit. We're fightning DAC8, and were going to win. Read more at dac8.com
“What we as an exchange have been forced to become is an agent of the EU's mass surveillance program.” @francispouliot_ on France's crypto kidnapping wave and why a leaked EU-wide database of every crypto user's identity, built under DAC8, would be catastrophic.

INVESTIGATION UPDATE 2 In our last update, we said we would share how many people had personal information exposed once we could confirm it. We can now share those numbers. Across our old WooCommerce store and our current Shopify store, records containing approximately 5,600 mailing addresses and 5,200 phone numbers, along with names and email addresses, were held in systems the attackers were able to reach. We cannot say for certain whether the attackers accessed all of these records, so we are treating all of them as potentially exposed. These records are a subset of our total customers. Why the data was still there: In our last update, we explained that copies of orders remained in old database tables after past migrations. We have since found that the 60-day redaction also did not cover every type of order, and that some customer details were stored in other parts of the store, such as abandoned carts and contact forms, that redaction never reached. Addresses not in our records: More than 5,000 of the email addresses that received phishing emails do not appear in our WooCommerce or Shopify customer records. Some match our support and hiring inboxes. Together with reports of details that were never shared with us, this makes us confident the attackers also used data from outside Foundation. We are still tracing where these addresses came from. What we are doing: Out of an abundance of caution, we are rotating all keys and secrets across our systems, including those we have no evidence were accessed. We are keeping a single copy of the legacy WooCommerce data offline as evidence for the investigation. Once the investigation is complete, that data will be permanently deleted. We have found no evidence that this incident compromised Passport devices or the private keys they hold. Never enter your recovery phrase into a website or share it with anyone, including someone claiming to be Foundation. We will continue sharing confirmed findings and publish our full report when the investigation is complete.

A farmer, tired of rats destroying his crops and stealing his grain, came up with a clever but cruel plan. He threw a dead pig into a deep, abandoned well. Attracted by the smell, nearly 80 rats rushed into the well to feast on the carcass. At first, everything seemed wonderful. There was more than enough food for everyone, and the rats ate until they were satisfied. But when the food was gone, they discovered something terrifying. The walls of the well were too steep to climb. They were trapped. Days passed, and hunger turned into desperation. Desperation turned into aggression. The rats that had once eaten peacefully beside one another began fighting for survival. Eventually, they began killing and eating each other. One by one, their numbers dwindled until only a single rat remained. Its eyes were bloodshot, and it had survived by consuming its own kind. Then the farmer returned, lowered a rope into the well, and rescued the last surviving rat. But he didn't save it out of kindness or compassion. The farmer knew the rat had learned to survive by hunting other rats. When he released it into his fields, it would continue killing its own kind instead of eating his grain. The farmer had turned his enemy into his greatest weapon. And that is the lesson of divide and conquer. Those who control the trap don't need to fight the battles themselves. They simply create the conditions in which others turn against one another. The rats believed their enemies were the other rats. They never realized that the true enemy was the farmer who had put them there. The greatest danger isn't always the enemy standing in front of you. Sometimes it's the one who created the conflict and stands quietly watching you destroy each other. Before you turn against your neighbor because of their political beliefs, ask yourself who benefits from keeping Americans divided. While we fight each other over Republican and Democrat, we may be overlooking those who profit from the conflict. Perhaps the real question isn't which side you're on, but who built the well—and why they want us fighting at the bottom of it.

This morning, we launched a new educational campaign aimed at helping Americans understand bitcoin and its place in the world today. Our campaign will stretch over 12 weeks and includes an educational website, gettingbitcoin.org, a series of 6 essays by leading thinkers in bitcoin, 6 full-page print ads, and 24 quarter-page print ads in the Wall Street Journal. Each of the six essays will appear as sponsored content in the Wall Street Journal, beginning with today’s by @LynAldenContact . The public discourse about bitcoin should really be better. This is our attempt to do something about it.

Honestly honored that @JAN3com copied our product which we released in January. Should have left it naked with an optional case so people can inspect the tracks on the PCB and verify with a multimeter. 🤓 Get the original, for less than half the price here: gobrrr.me/product/usb-data-b…

What makes Nunchuk different from other Bitcoin collaborative custody providers? Our service rests on four pillars: ✅ KYC-free ✅ No single point of failure ✅ Open standards ✅ Bitcoin-focused We committed to these pillars because of a unique experience that shaped us: our part in the Freedom Convoy incident of February 2022. When the Canadian government moved against the protesting truckers and their supporters, we were served a Mareva injunction demanding that we disclose information about our users and freeze their funds. Many services voiced support for self-custody in principle but watched from a distance, unwilling to take on the protesters as users for fear of the government’s response. That was the moment our vision of what Nunchuk should be became clear. The question we now ask of ourselves is simple: if an entity is powerful enough to compel us to disclose information about our users and freeze their funds — could we even do it? Can we and our clients withstand a state-level attack? And crucially, it’s not enough to be willing to say no. Our architecture has to make it so that we cannot comply in the first place. That’s why we’re KYC-free. Your privacy is paramount. Anyone targeting you learns nothing about you even if they compromise Nunchuk, because we don’t hold that information. The one exception is that subscribers provide an email at signup (an anonymous address like Proton works fine), because we need a way to reach you during exactly the kind of security incident we just lived through. Last weekend made the case that this trade-off was the right one. That’s why we insist on no single point of failure. In practice this means multi-vendor multisig as the foundation. For our assisted wallets, it also means the keys you hold are dedicated hardware signers (no hot key on the phone). In collaborative custody, the provider already holds one key. If the client’s other keys included a hot key running in an app the same provider maintains, a forced or malicious software update could seize a majority of keys (in a 2-of-N setup) and sweep or freeze funds. A hot key on the user’s phone would make life easier for us and our users, but it would fail the standard we set for ourselves in 2022. So we made the harder choice and disabled it entirely in our assisted wallets. That’s why we build on open standards. In the worst case, you can always migrate your Nunchuk setup to other software that follows the same Bitcoin standards, such as Sparrow. The exit door stays permanently open, even if Nunchuk were to disappear tomorrow. That’s why we’re Bitcoin-focused. Bitcoin is what we build for, and what we build on, including its Layer 2 system. The wider “blockchain” industry, with many centralizing points of failure, whether explicit or implicit, has proven throughout the years that it cracks under real pressure. We chose depth over breadth, and quality over quantity. These are the reasons Nunchuk stands apart from other services.

I did my own investigation because I obviously don't trust them. What I found is that the external dependency of the firmware with the critical vulnerability hidden in it was written by CoinKite's CTO @DocHex pretending to be someone else. All of the following can be verified:

The worst case scenario for self-custody fanatics was faulty RNG in a major hardware wallet. It happened. The worst case scenario for privacy fanatics was transaction history from privacy wallet being leaked to the US govenment. It happened (presumably). Both projects were engaged in bitter and toxic conflicts with their open-source competitors, using character assassination and bullying tactics to ridicule and silence the opposition. There are forces at play that are greater than our understanding. We cannot become soft in the face of demons but we also cannot let ourselves be corrupted by them. We must be humble yet we also need to be egregiously ambitious. We must serve yet we just also dominate. I will reflect on that, and I will pray for guidance.

Re: Cold Card Hack Hello fellow Bitcoiners, It’s been nearly one week since my wallet was drained. I lost my entire bitcoin stack, presumably the most in the entire attack - an amount I’m more than embarrassed and ashamed to even admit publicly. This was not only my life savings but my time, energy, hardcore conviction and identity after 13 years in this space. I am posting pseudonymously as I’ve always preferred to stay out of the spotlight - and privacy (inspired by Satoshi) is something I value. I debated whether or not I should say anything at all, but after much deliberation I decided it may be beneficial for other victims who are struggling. While this incident certainly forced upon me the darkest days of my life so far - I have now accepted it and will slowly put together my life again. I came from nothing and did everything right (except rolling the damn dice apparently 😅). I stayed away from trading, exchanges, shitcoins, ICOs, NFTs, false prophets, etc and quietly and consistently built up over the years through all the ups and downs - never spending frivolously on material goods but instead using bitcoin as my sense of freedom and security - with the hopes to pass it on to my future children. Even though that peace, freedom and security is now gone - I am beyond grateful for the journey and life that bitcoin enabled me to have. To all the other victims, as cliche as it is to say “it’s only money” - true wealth, as I’ve learned over and over again is in health, family, and friendships. I’d be lying if I told you I’m not afraid of the uncertainty ahead, but I know by taking one step at a time it will be possible to rebuild. Trust me if I can come to these realizations, you can too! The hardest challenges in life make us stronger and turn us into the best versions of ourselves - don’t give in to the hopelessness. By being in this community you are apart of something special that the majority of the world still hasn’t realized yet. It’s still early! Thanks to all the wonderful people in the community I’ve been DMing over the past week - your kind words of support mean the world to me and helped me start to believe in myself again. To the hacker: you still can do the right thing here and come clean - you have prompted a serious wake-up call that has brought the community together which will bring more resilience for the future. Doing the noble thing now will prevent a lifelong hunt. To all the amazing bitcoiners who have jumped to action from the very beginning to support each other and mitigate further damage - it’s been a beautiful thing to watch. To the @blocks team and especially @intangiblecoins, your efforts are inspiring and provide me with hope. Believe me when I say that IF I ever get my coins back you will all be taken care of very well, along with massive donations to the open source community. For now I will withhold any judgement towards @nvk and the @Coinkite team - while I’m still processing this loss and dealing with the gravity of building my life up from the ruins - I have 0 anger or resentment. Bitcoin security is a tough job, mistakes are made, and lessons are learned by all. I made mistakes by trusting and not verifying as well as not having a more robust security solution so the responsibility must be shared, hindsight is 20/20 and even though it’s tough: I’m okay admitting that. Bitcoin humbles all. Having said all that… I’M NOT FUCKING LEAVING!!! I will start building a new stack from the ground up like all the other plebs as my conviction in Bitcoin is even stronger today then when I got my first coins in 2013. This was never about the money - it was always about the revolution, and that can’t be stopped. We will win. Let’s keep our heads high. The march continues. It’s time to rebuild. PS: Thanks for everything Satoshi ❤️ -M
