Laaaaame. I’ll say it then. Taiwan is a nation. As in, Taiwan is a country.
The New York Times quietly deleted “the nation” from its piece on TSMC. Taiwan is no longer one. Dan Wang’s Oct. 23 guest essay originally read: “TSMC manufactures nearly all of its chips in Taiwan, the nation that China’s Communist Party has long coveted.” The live article now reads: “Taiwan, which China’s Communist Party has long coveted.” Same piece, same author, two words gone. No correction note. The original wording is documented across search results and quotes. The current version is what appears on the NYT site itself. This matches a long pattern. The Times has preferred “island” or “self-governing island” over “country” or “nation” in its own voice for years, a style choice reported in Taiwanese media as far back as 2006 and shared by most major Western outlets under the One China framework. Beijing polices that vocabulary. After the Times hosted Taiwan’s President Lai at its DealBook Summit and the host’s wording was read as treating Taiwan as a state, China expelled NYT correspondent Vivian Wang (who had no role in the interview). The paper called it wrong. The U.S. revoked a Xinhua journalist’s visa in response. When the cost of one word can be a reporter’s visa, it’s fair to ask who is editing whom.

THE SOVIET PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS, HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF: "Ukraine escaped as a freedom, we saw this revival in the 90's; thousands of churches have been opened....And now they came and are doing the same thing." Ukrainian Worship Pastor Mark Sergeev recalls the horror for those who lived under the yoke of the Soviet Union, especially as Christians, before Ukraine gained its independence and freedom in 1991. The Soviet Union’s crackdown on religion was a systematic, decades-long campaign aimed at eliminating religious beliefs and replacing them with state-sanctioned Marxist-Leninist atheism. Between 1917 and 1991, the Soviet government used legal restrictions, violent purges, propaganda, and state control to suppress the Russian Orthodox Church, Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, and other religious groups. Now, Putin and the Kremlin are doing the same thing in occupied Ukraine: Shutting down churches who don't comply to the regime's demands and utterly destroying hundreds of them (737+), and targeting and persecuting Christians, especially pastors and faith leaders (killed 54+), all in attempt to make Ukrainian Christians submit to the Kremlin over God....Putin and the Kremlin continue to take the Lord's name in vain, propping themselves as Christian leaders while committing acts of evil against the Body of Christ. We pray for their hearts to turn in repentance, and be saved! 📖 Psalm 5:4 - For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. 🎬 "Even in the Ruins": faithinwar.com 🙏 Share, and Pray for Ukraine #Ukraine #Christian #Faith #Evangelical #SovietUnion #Church

📍The first satellite images showing the aftermath of the UAV attack on JSC 75th Arsenal in Serpukhov, Moscow Oblast, which was struck on October 22. Despite the poor image quality, impacts can be seen on workshops No. 24 and 25, which specialize in the repair and restoration of components for Russia’s S-300V and Buk air defense systems, Tunguska-M gun-missile systems, and radar systems. A hangar adjacent to the workshops was also hit.

The MRE now officially became space food lol. I want space MREs.
With support from @SpaceX, the AFRL agile cargo pods were recovered after splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. Each pod contained representative mission equipment to study the effects of temperature, shock, and vibration of the cargo environments during launch and reentry. #Readiness

Around 2016, Jim Belosic bought a $750,000 laser cutter on a whim. This month, his company SendCutSend raised $140 million and hit a valuation of $2.1 billion. It's on track to make 50 million metal parts this year for more than 300,000 customers. This is the story of how SendCutSend arrived and ended up reviving US industry. corememory.com/p/sendcutsend…

Good Victor Shih piece on Chinese debt. Within a year it won’t just be a few worried economists at PKU and THU who talk about Chinese debt.
We (Jonathan Elkobi, me) are happy that @chinaquarter has accepted our new piece “The End of Fiscal Autonomy. ” Yes, it’s provocatively titled but this is an important data point for analyzing China’s economy. A large literature suggests that local autonomy, including fiscal “federalism” has been a key ingredient to growth and local reform initiatives. If local governments literally have little to no autonomy, their incentives and ability to use local initiatives to generate growth also declines. Below, I summarize our findings with link of pre-pub version at the end. Quick primer: Chinese budgeting is broken into 1. ordinary budget to finance public services, civil service salaries and 2. Extra budgetary fund (EBF) used to finance land acquisition/sale, infrastructure projects and other discretionary spend. The source of the problem is here—ordinary revenue at the local level has grown very modestly over a 6-year period (21%), while EBF revenue (land income) has not grown at all due to the property crackdown. Central transfers made up the bulk of the growth in non-debt sources of income for local governments. (1/N)

China calls Tibet’s takeover “peaceful liberation.” But whose peace, and whose freedom? Since 1950, Tibetans have endured Chinese rule while fighting to preserve their faith, language and identity. Occupation is not liberation. Free Tibet!

I wonder if this has anything to do with some aggressive maneuvering by Russian satellites in recent years, including one this month to the close proximity of an ICEEYE satellite? Signaling to Musk.
I'm now considerably more open to the rumor going around that Putin bluffed Elon with a threat to attack his satellites and Musk folded like a cheap suit.

Europe Must Hear the Voice of Democratic Russia ⬜️🟦⬜️ The Congress of People's Deputies continues to engage with European institutions, calling for a stronger international response to Putin's regime and recognition of Russia's responsibility for its war against Ukraine. The Congress recently received an official reply from the European External Action Service (EEAS) to a letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Commissioner Magnus Brunner. In its appeal, the Congress called for Russia to be recognised as a terrorist state and a state sponsor of terrorism. The EEAS response condemned Russia's war against Ukraine as a serious violation of international law, including the UN Charter. It also reaffirmed the EU's commitment to supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary. The reply does not mean that the EU has accepted the Congress's proposals. However, the Congress intends to continue raising these issues with European institutions. For its delegates, international cooperation involves more than sending letters and receiving official replies. It requires regular contact with European officials, concrete proposals and continued political discussions. The Congress argues that Russia's future should not be decided solely by representatives of the regime responsible for the war against Ukraine. It believes democratic Russian forces should also be involved in international discussions about accountability for the war, restoring the rule of law and establishing peaceful relations with neighbouring countries. The Congress says it will continue working with European institutions to ensure that democratic Russian voices are heard and its political proposals receive serious consideration. t.me/i_ponomarev/14647

Putin’s Residence Gets Air Defense Network Half the Size of Moscow’s— Russia has expanded the air defense network around Putin’s Valdai residence to more than 50 positions, with satellite analysis identifying another 16 towers forming an outer defensive ring. Most of the new structures appeared in October, extending protection up to 50 kilometers from the residence, predominantly on its southern approaches. The towers are believed to be intended for Pantsir or Tor systems, although identifying a structure does not establish that an operational weapon is installed. The perimeter also encompasses Khotilovo military airfield, which Putin uses and which connects to the residence through a dedicated railway spur. The number of identified positions has roughly doubled since April. The concentration is striking: the Valdai area has fewer than 100,000 residents, yet its defensive network amounts to approximately half the number of new positions built around Moscow and the surrounding region, home to more than 20 million people.
