We are closely monitoring the Cuban government’s announcement that they will soon release 51 prisoners. We remain alarmed at the hundreds of political prisoners that are unjustly detailed in Cuba. The regime must #FreeThemAll, including artists Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Castillo Pérez.

Today we recognize the courage of Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Castillo Pérez, who used their art to push back against the Cuban government’s restrictions on artistic freedom and expression—and were unjustly imprisoned for it. We reiterate our call for their immediate release, and the immediate release of all political prisoners in Cuba. #FreeThemAll

Three years ago today, the US received 222 individuals—including opposition leaders, journalists, activists, and clergy—who had been imprisoned for years by the Nicaraguan government for exercising their fundamental freedoms. While we welcomed an end to their arbitrary detention, we continue to condemn their forced banishment and call on the Nicaraguan government to immediately and unconditionally release all remaining political prisoners.

We welcome reports of the ongoing release of several political prisoners in Venezuela, including Rocío San Miguel and Biagio Pilieri. Hundreds still remain unjustly detained, with their wellbeing at serious risk. We call for their immediate and unconditional release, and urge the interim government to halt any further politically motivated repression of the Venezuelan people. #FreeThemAll
Venezuelan authorities began releasing political prisoners, including citizens and foreigners, in what is described as a “unilateral gesture” by the government. wapo.st/49aTIYi

Freedom House condemns the Venezuelan government’s ongoing efforts to strip @leopoldolopez of his citizenship. Lopez, who served a 5-year sentence for opposing Maduro’s dictatorship, now resides in exile and leads the @WLCongress, a global network of prominent democratic activists.
This latest effort to harass Lopez in exile comes amid the Venezuelan regime’s longstanding record of transnational repression and contempt for fundamental rights.

We are grateful for @RepDWStweets’s ongoing advocacy on behalf of artists Maykel “Osorbo” Castillo Pérez and @LMOAlcantara, who have been unjustly imprisoned in Cuba since 2021.
We echo her calls for Maykel, Luis, and the hundreds of other Cuban political prisoners’ immediate and unconditional release and urge @SecRubio to help facilitate their freedom. #SOSCuba
Tomorrow is the 4th anniversary of the brutal silencing of Cuba's pro-democracy protestors.
Wherever dissent is crushed, we must raise our voices. I urged @SecRubio to intervene & free political prisoners like Maykel Osorbo & Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara.
