I spoke with a principal today who welcomes all the subs in the building as part of her morning announcements. She uses it as an opportunity to make the subs feel valued and to underscore the high expectations for students. How cool is that!?

I draw on the wisdom of Toni Morrison: "This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal." #WeRefuse.

Whew, what a busy month of school! Hello X! I have such a killer group of students this year & I am excited to show them off. One of my favorites so far was making AirBNBs for the 13 colonies. Had a competition for most creative title and prettiest pictures...voting was intense.

I was touched to see Gus Walz’s joy when his dad @Tim_Walz took the stage last night. Thankful for you showing us all what real love looks like, Gus. Let’s be a nation that embraces this kind of warmth and vulnerability, instead of making fun or mocking it. We could all use some of Gus’s example in our own lives.

History is all about contingency—nothing is inevitable. Teach students to see our current election through this lens, understanding the power and uncertainty of their role in shaping history. #TeachDemocracy #HistoryEducation

I agree with many SSTeachers that the 2024 election will be discussed, for years to come, but this fall will be an unprecedented educational moment & opportunity. It is time to start gathering sources & resources. One document above all others will be key. #Constitution #sschat

Joe Biden’s presidency has been transformational. He accomplished more in the past four years — to bring back jobs, stand up to big corporations, and build an economy that works for all of us — than we have been able to get done in the last forty. He deserves full credit for beating Donald Trump in 2020, and his selfless decision today gives us our best shot at doing it again in 2024. While Donald Trump tried to tear down our democracy to maintain his grip on power, Joe Biden willingly stepped aside in order to protect our democracy. President Biden’s selfless action is a profound gift to the people of the United States — and it’s on all of us not to waste it. I endorse Kamala Harris for President. She is a proven fighter who has been a national leader in safeguarding consumers and protecting access to abortion. As a former prosecutor, she can press a forceful case against allowing Donald Trump to regain the White House. We have many talented people in our party, but Vice President Harris is the person who was chosen by the voters to succeed Joe Biden if needed. She can unite our party, take on Donald Trump, and win in November.
