A new study published in @FutureHealthJ, led by experts from the #NHS, the @UniofBath, @LancasterUni and @durham_uni, shows that England’s elective waiting list must be cut by more than half – from the current 7.4 million to 3.4 million – to achieve the government’s target of 92% of patients waiting no longer than 18 weeks for treatment.

Four industries – tobacco, ultra-processed foods, fossil fuels and alcohol – cause 34% of all deaths. It’s never been more important to talk about how these, and other industries, shape health and health policy, so I’m proud to have guest edited the latest issue of @FutureHealthJ the journal of @RCPhysicians which features a series of extraordinary pieces by world leading academics, charities and some exceptional young people.
If you’re interested in commercial determinants of health and conflicts of interest this is an incredible resource.

A pleasure to speak on @BBCr4today this morning with a former head of the @Foodanddrinkfed, Ian Wright.
He made the claim that the alcohol industry partnerships with policy makers to improve responsible drinking have worked.
But UK government data show that since 2016 alcohol related deaths have increased by more than 20%, alcohol related admissions to hospital have increased and years of life lost due to alcohol have increased.
Hard to square the data with the claim.
