Your Starlink dish only talks to one sat.
That sat still has to get your traffic to a ground station on fiber. If it cannot see one, you are stuck. Mid-ocean that used to be the whole problem.
So the sats talk to each other with lasers. Your data hops across the sky until one of them can hit a gateway and dump you into the normal internet.
You are not riding one bird. You are riding a network of thousands of satellites.
Free cash flow is Tesla's own definition: cash from running the business (operating cash flow) minus spending on factories and equipment (capex).
Why it flipped from Q2: capex fell from $5.79B to $4.73B, and payables plus accruals (bills still owed to suppliers and others) added $3.99B to cash, up from $1.94B.
2026 capex plan: more than $25B (Tesla 10-Q, 23 Jul 2026).

Tesla could be building cars faster right now. It just can't get enough batteries.
With its biggest car backlog in 4 years, it's now refining its own lithium, making its own cathodes and building its own cells to catch up.
Q3 Shareholder Update → ir.tesla.com
Highlights
– FSD Supervised attach rate grew to over 75% of new vehicle deliveries in NA
– Unveiled the next-gen Roadster
– Record deliveries in Canada, Australia, Japan & Taiwan
– Tesla Semi now in volume production. Top variant can go up to 500 miles at a full 82,000 lbs while achieving efficiency of 1.7 kWh/mile – about a third of the energy a comparable diesel truck burns for the same load
– Ended the quarter with the largest backlog for our passenger vehicles in 4 years!
FSD Supervised
– 4 new approvals since Q2 (Croatia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Slovakia)
– FSD is now live in nine EU countries & used by over 100,000 customers logging more than 160 million kilometers since initial approval
Robotaxi
– Deployed Cybercab into our Austin fleet
– Hit nearly 2 million cumulative unsupervised miles, 8x growth in the quarter
– Austin service now runs 6 am to midnight, with wait times continuing to come down as we add cars & improve the orchestration algorithms
– Added Grok to Cybercab with Grok Bot & Connectors, letting you interface with your inbox, calendar, files, chats and tasks, all by voice.
Transport, office & living room in one
Robotics
– Started production of @Tesla_Optimus on our high-volume lines in Fremont.
These are the first production-quality bots we've built, proving that the current manufacturing process for Optimus is suitable for a commercial product
SI Compute
– On track for 400 MW of training compute by year end, feeding both vehicle & humanoid autonomy
– Austin Fab construction continues, equipment commissioning planned for 2027
Battery
– Battery supply is still the limiter on how fast we ramp vehicles globally, so we're expanding on every front: pack capacity in Berlin, cathode and lithium refining in Texas, LFP cells in Nevada
– Shipped the first Megapacks built entirely with our own LFP cells
– Increasing 4680 output to support ramp of Cybercab, Semi & Model Y
Energy
– Megafactory Texas is up & running, with Megapack 3 production started
– Highest-ever order rate & backlog for energy storage
Grid constraints & power availability are making Megapack the answer for SI infrastructure demand: it excels at supplying large data center loads, smooths out demand spikes, helps new projects meet grid connection rules & makes the grid itself more stable
All with less local fossil fuel generation
Supporting Infrastructure
– Added 2,100+ net new Supercharger stalls, up 14% year over year
Is Tesla's Robotaxi safer than a human driver?
Tesla's first Robotaxi safety report is out, covering its driving since late January with no safety monitor in the car.
Zero crashes where someone was hurt. Human drivers would have had about 9 over the same Texas miles, by Tesla's numbers.
Sources: Tesla Robotaxi Safety Report tesla.com/robotaxi/safety and Ashok's post xitter.cf/aelluswamy/status/2112…
Robotaxi's injury and pedestrian counts only include crashes where it hit first. Human counts include all crashes. Two events were left out. Remote operator miles are in.
We are launching the Tesla Robotaxi safety report today.
Till date, Robotaxi has driven a total of 3.3 million miles autonomously, and has had zero injuries nor airbag deployments. If the same number of miles were to be manually driven, we should expect roughly 9 injuries to the occupants or other pedestrians and 4 airbag deployments on average.
We will continue to transparently share our progress with the public using this page.

Normal computers lose value as they age. Elon said on the $SPCX earnings call that "the value of compute per watt will increase over time, not decrease."
"We could rent out our compute several times over if we said yes to everyone." Even "old computers like H100s" are "renting for more than they rented when they were new."
SpaceX tried renting extra from other cloud companies. None had any spare.
SpaceX is going to be 5 - 10x the size of what Tesla is today in terms of annual revenue in about 14 months.
Orchestra Bio builds AI agents that coordinate drug programs - tracking studies, timelines, and cross-team impacts so leaders can respond faster when issues arise.
OpenAI acquired them to combine this with Rosalind (its AI models for biology and chemistry reasoning, plus tools that connect to lab data), covering both the science and the operational work needed to move treatments forward.
OpenAI bought Orchestra Bio, whose AI agents track drug programs.
Until now, Rosalind covered the science: GPT-Rosalind reasons through biology and chemistry, while Rosalind Workbench links models to lab tools and data.
Orchestra targets a different bottleneck, the coordination work that spreads a drug program across departments, contractors and disconnected software.
Its agents monitor studies and timelines, so when a manufacturing batch fails, they map which trials slip and compare responses for program leaders to choose.
Anthropic paid roughly $400M in stock for Coefficient Bio in April, so both labs are now buying specialist biology teams.
Development still averages 10 to 15 years from target to US approval, a clock largely set by trial biology and regulators.
Elon: "I would be surprised" if SpaceX has less than 13 GW of compute by end-2027, up from 1.7 GW today
Elon says SpaceX could be making $500B to $1T a year by the end of 2027. Here's the simple maths.
SpaceX rents out computers for AI, and every gigawatt of them brings in about $50B a year.
It will have about 3 gigawatts by the end of this year and plans 13 by the end of 2027. 13 x $50B = $650B a year.
If everything goes well and they surpass 13 and hit 20, that's $1T in annual recurring revenue.

Very cool demo, but this is all scripted. These robots have little intelligence to allow them to operate fully autonomously.
BMW to cut 8,000 jobs by the end of 2027….. its a shame for the employees but it’s clearly a company in decline.
BMW is offering severance packages exceeding €650,000 ($750,000+) as part of a major workforce restructuring.
The German automaker plans to cut approximately 8,000 jobs worldwide by the end of 2027, targeting annual cost savings of €1 billion starting in 2028.
Severance payments vary based on salary, age, and years of service, with additional bonuses for employees who leave early.
Interestingly, so many employees applied for voluntary redundancy that BMW reportedly closed the program ahead of schedule.
Germany's automotive industry is facing a major transformation, and workforce restructuring is becoming part of that reality.

United basically warning investors that it’s not as far progressed on robotics as people may think.
After its stock surge, Unitree is urging caution.
The company warns that humanoid robotics is still in the early stages of commercialization—and slower adoption could hit growth and valuations.

Even industry veterans like Ferrari CEO praised Tesla on the Roadster reveal.
Ferrari's own CEO just gave Tesla's new Roadster a PERFECT 10/10 for technology and another 10/10 for its presentation
Benedetto Vigna praised Tesla for showing that the automotive industry still has enormous room to innovate and take risks
“We have to keep dreaming”
“Even in an old world, you can still innovate and dare”
Coming from the CEO of Ferrari, that's an incredibly massive compliment to what Elon Musk and Tesla have just built
If you want to own SpaceX and Tesla just go ahead and purchase both stock. The merger may end up taking longer than many expect.
Ark Invest on a potenial Tesla-SpaceX merger:
"A SpaceX-Tesla merger could take place within the next five years. Tesla’s highly cash-generative robotaxi network could help fund SpaceX’s ambitious plans for orbital data centers, and at the same time SpaceX’s compute-intensive frontier AI models could serve as the planning layer for Optimus deployments. Working together on the Terafab project, both companies could alleviate chip constraints. Combined, we estimate that SpaceX and Tesla could generate $3.8 trillion in revenue and $2.7 trillion in EBIT15 by 2031, with SpaceX contributing roughly 62% and 69%, respectively."
AI labs are going to eat SaaS.
ChatGPT now builds a working tool right inside the chat.
Agents like Grok Bot, which I use, already do your work inside Salesforce and HubSpot through their connectors.
Once your agent builds the interface too, how often will you open the SaaS tool? And once it copies the workflows and holds your records itself, why pay for the subscription?
