“The strategy to win a Green New Deal, I think, is going to take nothing less than massive strikes” “In a capitalist system…workers walking off the job is the single most powerful act that we can take” –@rsgexp youtu.be/dVR_0UmwkKc

In the final video of our (amazing) speaker series, Jane McAlevey addresses what we– as American citizens– must do to get the Green New Deal passed. We may not be the ones in Congress, but we have the power and right to make the legislature work for us. Take it to the streets.

“[Americans] took the view that the government should intervene… in an utterly democratic way that serves the people… [The New Deal] is an American program and it was a huge success. There’s no reason we can’t do it again” – Richard Walker youtu.be/GEJ35bG6nDY

Listen to Walker (@LivingNewDeal) dive into the history and legacy of the New Deal. When faced with economic collapse, Americans in the 20th century took a leap on legislation to support everyday people. It paid off then, and Walker tells us that it can work again with the GND.

You can read more from Richard Walker in his chapter, “From the New Deal to the Green New Deal” in our recently released volume: “The Green New Deal and the Future of Work,” edited by Drs. Craig Calhoun and Benjamin Fong. Get your copy here: cup.columbia.edu/book/the-gr…
“We really need to have the power of the labor movement to win a Green New Deal, and so it’s really important to be thinking about how do we bring labor into the Green New Deal coalition.” –@alybatt youtu.be/Vmwb97cEYJ0

Battistoni explains how the GND can strengthen the labor movement. As the demographics of the labor movement shift, opportunities to build alliances and communities grow as well. She encourages us to envision broader economic and social transformation for a new age of labor.

Battistoni elaborates on these ideas (and more) in her chapter “A Green New Deal for Care: Revaluing the Work of Social and Ecological Reproduction” which can be found in our recently-published volume, “The Green New Deal and the Future of Work.” cup.columbia.edu/book/the-gr…
“It’s a really big challenge to remake our built environment in a profound, rapid, and liberating way, so we have to start that organizing and that political debate right now” – @aldatweets youtu.be/txb6KooDVFU

Our crew sat down with Daniel Aldana Cohen (@UCBerkeley) who discussed the GND and the massive changes to physical infrastructure that it needs and demands. It is up to us, he explains, to figure out how to change our built environment in a community-driven and egalitarian way.

The Green New Deal is talking really explicitly about the connections between the environment, the economy, and equity and saying that none of them can be split apart.” –@rgunns youtu.be/rnFBHmZveeU

Listen to Rhiana Gunn-Wright speak on the ways in which policy surrounding climate change has to be multifaceted and all-encompassing. To create a better future, we all have parts to play (including putting social pressure on people and politicians to foster change).
Authors Ben Fong and Craig Calhoun spoke about "The Green New Deal and the Future of Work," labor, policy, and more at #CWDconference2022 @CWD_ASU

[With the climate crisis] “there’s going to be these openings on the right and the left and the question is going to be, who can organize? Who can provide a compelling analysis of what’s going on [and] what should be done…” –Richard Lachmann youtu.be/PMEYG2XuK1U

Our team was very lucky to be able to sit down with Richard Lachmann over two years ago to discuss how the Green New Deal can undermine militarism both inside and outside of the United States. The late sociologist’s expertise on historical sociology was invaluable.

“One very important lesson from the history of social movements is that ordinary people DO have power” “We should hope for the Green New Deal being not only a set of policies, but a kind of platform for new social movements…” – Frances Fox Piven youtu.be/a6PlhespqPQ

In this video, Frances Fox Piven (@GC_CUNY) discusses the role of social movements in American history and their ability to create change with the Green New Deal. Piven reminds us that change requires the power of many, a power that we can– and must– access.
