We can't make climate progress w the same old playbook. We need a green economic populism that brings immediate, material benefits to the working class—tackling both carbon and the cost-of-living crisis. We can start local rn. Thrilled to share my NYT op-ed w @triofrancos!

Lula's heartlands are poor, Catholic rural areas but his biggest gains versus 2022 came in poor, evangelical urban areas

What a comeback. We will need time to properly understand it. But I think this was a 20th century politician who, at the very last possible moment, figured out how to run a 21st century campaign. After his first round loss, Lula started carrying a smartphone for the first time in his life, brought in younger aides who knew how to run a real digital operation, and finally was able to create some excitement in one of the world’s most terminally online countries. The net result was 3 million more people who turned out to vote, fewer spoiled ballots, votes from third-party candidates, and some repented bolsonaristas as well. Flávio Bolsonaro challenged the results, but he faces an extremely difficult battle. The margin of victory, more than 4 million votes, was too large to be explained by the delay in polling stations closing or any other abnormalities. Big Brazilian power brokers, including the so-called Centrão, are dutifully accepting the result. The Bolsonaros will ask the White House for support, but it’s important that the vast majority of Latin American leaders, including those on the right like Keiko Fujimori and José Antonio Kast, quickly recognized Lula’s victory. They concluded this is over, and the Trump administration may do the same. For Lula, the good news is that he won, and the bad news is that he won. He ran up a big bill to help make this happen: More than $60 billion in extra spending, welfare payments, debt forgiveness and other fiscal largesse. This in a country with real interest rates above 8% and a debt burden forecast to reach 83% of GDP this year, up a whopping 12 percentage points in Lula’s term. Markets are hemorrhaging in the hours after his victory, and they may get worse until Lula details his plans to cut spending. Lula also faces the most conservative Congress on record, a skeptical business community, and consumers who are struggling under huge debts as well. But look, Lula would rather deal with those problems than the alternative. He will be the man who defined an entire half-century of Brazilian history, from the metalworkers’ strike he led as a labor union leader in 1979 to the end of his fourth term in 2030. A truly epic story that is still being written, and may yet bring more surprises. -- For more, including reactions from @DaniCamp0 and Alessandra Ribeiro: americasquarterly.org/articl…

it seems that Flavio winning in the 1st round was the figurative kick in the butt the PT needed to actually run a serious get-out-the vote presidential campaign. Alas, if Lula had treated the 1st round as he did the 2nd, maybe the incoming Congress would not be so rightwing

Tomorrow I’m going to think about how hard Lula’s last term will be, the task of reconstructing the Workers Party, etc etc. But tonight? So happy, so relieved!!!

To give you a small idea of the chaos: At São Paulo’s biggest voting station (PUC), some voting machines were closed for the night, while some still open. If you were assigned a closed machine, you cannot vote. That’s in SÃO PAULO. Expect massive legal challenges nationwide. Nobody knows what happens next

Lula supporters are taking to the streets of São Paulo and say they are convinced that the public transport scandal is a deliberate ploy to damage Lula’s chances. “I think it’s another attempted coup by the extreme right,” says Lucas Lopes.

Amid claims of a deliberate pro-Bolsonaro attempt to suppress the vote in numerous parts of Brazil by sabotaging public transport, Lula warns of "abominable ... banditry" and urges people to keep trying to vote. Calls for voting to be extended by 2 hours until 7pm.

This will leave a lasting impression on Hochul and she’s going to tell her allies about it. This, combined with Obama rallying with Abdul and celebrating his call to move beyond the ACA toward Medicare for All, marks a real turning point for the party.

That’s Paulista Avenue, where Lula supporters are having their campaign closer. There’s people to the other side too. It is the biggest led by the Workers’ Party I’ve ever seen. Possibly bigger than the one of right-wingers in 2016 for Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment.

There’s a lot at stake in Brazil’s election —not just for Brazilians but for the globe. One thing that has not gotten enough attention is Amazon deforestation, which fell dramatically in recent years, but is likely to worsen again if voters decide to change course Sunday 1/3

Conflating clean energy and data centers is a policy choice—a choice we shouldn’t make!!!
NEW POLL: More than 3 in 4 voters (76%) would support a new transmission line in their community to connect more clean energy to the grid. In contrast, voters are 40 points less supportive of building transmission lines to connect more AI data centers.

To understand Lula’s challenge, a must-read: Brazil’s far right has produced a “revolutionary individualism… seductive and far-reaching, regardless of its cynicism, its collusion with the most brutal forms of plunder and dispossession…”

The moment demands “that we reevaluate the left’s achievements, its limits, its tactics, its repertoires and its ability to mobilise… alternatives must be created that match the political-cultural revolution launched, with such astounding success, by the rival camp.”
