A significant milestone!!! 🎉
Excited to share our publications on the 2026 Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda.
We assessed whether existing Ebola Zaire treatments would be effective against Ebola Bundibugyo.
PS. My first-authored paper in Nature Communications! 🧬

Over the past 10 weeks, ACE-Uganda trained novices in the Introduction to Bioinformatics Course; and for the first time, they visited our center in person.
Congratulations to all who finished. The future of bioinformatics in Africa and Uganda is bright🌄.

Today, we physically launch IDM-Africa!
Sub-Saharan Africa has a critical shortage of disease modellers.
The IDM-Africa project is changing that by training researchers to forecast outbreaks, design interventions, and inform policy.

🎉 That's a wrap!
2 weeks. 30 researchers. Countless analysis done. A community built.
The ABI Summer School 2026 has officially ended; but the connections and skills will last a lifetime.
Well done, everyone.

Can existing Zaire Ebola treatments work against the Bundibugyo species?
At #AFREhealth_26 @semawule presented genomic & structural analysis to answer that question.
This work is considered for publication in Nature Comms journal.

Thank you @USEmbassyUganda for the spotlight.
Through @uspto online training and U.S. Department of State-supported programs, I gained exposure to proven approaches to intellectual property, innovation and leadership.
#MyAmericanEdge is beyond what I learned; the knowledge gained has enabled me to create tools useful for the innovation ecosystem in Uganda.
Uganda’s ICT Intellectual Property Guidelines, and the Innovate & Protect IP Management Toolkit, have reached over 2,000+ innovators and are freely accessible on the @MoICT_Ug website.
Ideas need systems that enable them to be protected, commercialized, and scaled. And therefore these tools have been put in place to facilitate the protection of Ugandan innovations.

What happens when Ugandan ambition meets the American edge? @shirley_glirdys took proven U.S. IP protection frameworks and adapted it for young Ugandan creators. #MyAmericanEdge

Text under #MyAmericanEdge reads: “I trained with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, then built an IP toolkit specifically for young Ugandan creators—protecting their ideas and innovations.”

The global genomics market will exceed $1 trillion by 2030.
Without the infrastructure to generate that value, Africa risks buying back knowledge from its own biology.
African bioinformatics is not just scientific. It's economic. And sovereign.
