"By one key measurement, Canada is already “the 51st State” that Donald Trump cruelly and senselessly characterizes as being its future.
The World Bank puts the U.S. 2025 GDP per person at $90,250. Canada’s 2025 GDP per person is $55,698. Mississippi, the poorest state in America, sits at $55,877. So Canada’s national average is below the level of all 50 U.S. states.
The Economist bluntly quotes Jean Charest, who was premier of Quebec from 2003 to 2012, as believing that “Canadians may one day thank America’s president for shocking them out of a slumber.” The first sign that may be happening came from British Columbia on Saturday.
As Charest himself puts it, “Trump is now telling us we have no choice but to change.”" @johnfund
✍🏻My dear friend, @johnfund, with an excellent piece on the Conservative victory in BC and the breaking of the TDS fever in Canada. Must read! 🇨🇦🇺🇸

One wonders what Carney intends to give up or why he walked in the first place?
🔥 President Trump is practically STANDING on the Canadian border in Port Huron, Michigan, going after PM Mark Carney
"Canada has been making $90 BILLION a year off us for years and years. They've taken advantage of our country, but we're getting close to a deal.”
“I love Canada! I love everything about it — other than some of the leaders.”
Ironically 2 of the 3 you mentioned haven’t ratified the CETA - even after a dozen years

I'm not a Carney cheerleader (would likely never vote for him unless the Conservatives offered up someone truly horrific) but it's not that hard to transition from negotiating with the EU to negotiating with France, Germany, Italy, etc. on individual basis.

Carney’s “prudent banker” brand is dead. The PBO just showed the books are being cooked
Debt-service costs are now the fastest-growing federal expense: $25B five years ago → $59B this year (already larger than the Canada Health Transfer) → $83B in five years. Pure interest, paid before anything else
PBO Annette Ryan: the government’s fiscal “anchors” are “more like traffic lights.” Capital spending gets a green light; operating spending is a yellow at best. “Limited fiscal discipline. It’s not stopping spending.”
Real cash borrowing over five years: $733B. New debt from deficits: only $333B. The ~$400B gap is being parked with Crown corporations, loans and special funds—“a step removed from parliamentary oversight.” New risks, she said, and less transparency
The former Bank of Canada/Bank of England governor who once policed balance sheets is now redefining accounting so the headline targets stay pretty while the actual liability grows off-books. Taxpayers get stuck with the interest bill @PBO_DPB

Mark Carney promised to spend less.
Instead, he doubled Trudeau's deficits. Now, interest on Liberal debt will cost a family of 4 about $6,000.
On Tuesday, Conservatives will move to call the Prime Minister before the Finance Committee to ask him how he plans to cut deficits, debt interest, and taxes to save Canadians money.

David Coletto at Abacus earning his Liberal polling contracts.
Liberal lead up to 16, 48 to 32 over the Conservatives.
Of course, he is again oversampling Carney's 60+ base.
Despite them representing only about 25% - 26% of the population, they make up over 36% of the sample.

Federal Liberal MP Jennifer McKelvie was the deputy mayor of Toronto under Olivia Chow.
After working closely with Chow, McKelvie is endorsing Brad Bradford.
Tells you something.
Toronto, we have two days left to vote for change.
Thank you to my friend and former Deputy Mayor of Toronto @mckelvieAJAX for backing our plan to get Toronto moving, keep taxes down and make our streets safer.
Now, let’s finish strong. Get your friends, family and everyone you know out to vote on Monday.

Hi. Meteorologist here.
There is no such thing as a “heat storm.”
Just more made-up BS.
Since the 1960s, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by more than 30%. The average portion of the planet likely to be covered by heat storms and heat waves has risen more than 12-fold. Explore the first in our series on this climate phenomenon reut.rs/4sl2Kdi

We sit on one of the biggest oil reserves on Earth.
Last year we spent $21.4 BILLION importing gas, diesel and jet fuel. 80% of it from the US.
One new refinery built in 40 years. New Brunswick's refinery, the biggest in the country, still can't get Canadian crude by pipeline.
Meanwhile 1 in 4 Canadians live in food-insecure homes, groceries are up 33% since 2020, and food banks just hit a record 2.35 million visits in one month.
Fuel moves food. This isn't complicated.
Basic math, eh? 🇨🇦

"Carney has long mused about a rupture with the U.S., well before his... Davos speech... The difficulty is that the Europe of Carney’s imagination is largely a figment. If it ever did exist, it has long since passed, with the Eurosceptic right coming to dominate the continent."🎯

It’s part of the sneaky 2nd carbon that costs drivers 15 cts/l (@ 15% ethanol, 17 cts/l @ 10%)
Liberal supporters don’t mind one bit as they can just visit a food bank or get a govt cheque to be fooled into believing they don’t pay for this … including 19 cts/l on diesel

Is that from Carney’s excise tax break until the end of the year ? or something new ?

this ridiculous crusade adds 10 to 15 cents to a litre of gasoline and literally converts food ,in a world where people still starve, to fuel when gasoline ,without ethanol, is better suited to the purpose. We are governed by idiots.

Isn’t ethanol made from corn 🌽? Don’t voters reconcile these retarded policies with reality?
Now your corn at the grocery store will be at the bargain basement price of a dozen for $20. Let that sink in. 🤦♂️

Great economics! Use corn for fuel not food and increase the costs of both. The LPC's race to the bottom has no end.

Carney wants into the EU. What a moron!

Wonderful job, Mr. Carney. Truly impressive.
By the first quarter of 2026, real GDP growth since Q1 2025 looked like this:
USA: +2.7%
Australia: +2.5%
OECD average: +1.7%
Canada: −0.1%
Dead last among the economies shown.
We were promised economic competence, investment, productivity and prosperity. Instead, Canada spent a year falling further behind its peers.
Yes, American tariffs are a problem. But Canada’s weak productivity, regulatory burden and investment climate didn’t begin with Trump.
Carney was sold as the man who could fix Canada’s economy. Canadians have every right to judge him by the results rather than the speeches.
Turns out, managing an economy is considerably harder than talking about one. 🤡🌎
