🇲🇾 Malaysia is negotiating a settlement with Deutsche Bank over a $1.1 billion lawsuit linked to 1MDB. The talks could offer another route to recover money from one of the country’s biggest financial scandals.
🧵
The public cost remains enormous. Malaysia has paid $10.4 billion toward $12.58 billion in 1MDB obligations and recovered about $7.66 billion through settlements and other recoveries. Around $2.18 billion in obligations remains.
Without further recoveries, the net cost to public finances could reach about $4.92 billion.
The real test of any Deutsche Bank settlement is this: how much money returns to Malaysia, and how much stays with taxpayers?

🇬🇧 Britain and 🇯🇵 Japan are urging households to stockpile food and water for emergencies.
Britain recommends supplies for at least 72 hours. Japan advises preparing for three days without government assistance, preferably a full week.
🧵
Japan’s warning is driven by earthquake risk. A magnitude-9 Nankai Trough earthquake could kill up to 300,000 people in the government’s worst-case estimates.
Tsunamis could reach some coastal communities within minutes, while millions could be forced to evacuate.
The message from both governments is practical: build emergency supplies gradually, before a crisis hits.
Could your household manage three days without electricity, running water or access to shops?
