The public cost remains enormous. Malaysia has paid $10.4 billion toward $12.58 billion in 1MDB obligations and recovered about $7.66 billion through settlements and other recoveries. Around $2.18 billion in obligations remains.
🇸🇬 The recovery campaign extends beyond one bank. In September, companies linked to 1MDB sued Singapore’s DBS for about $1 billion. Malaysia has also reached settlements with other financial institutions.
The bank failed to get the case dismissed on statute-of-limitations grounds in July 2025. Now, a new court hearing on October 26 could reveal more about a possible settlement.
The case concerns three foreign-exchange transactions handled by Deutsche Bank Malaysia in 2009 and 2011. 1MDB alleges contractual breaches, negligence and dishonest assistance. The allegations have not been established by a final judgment.
🇲🇾 Malaysia is negotiating a settlement with Deutsche Bank over a $1.1 billion lawsuit linked to 1MDB. The talks could offer another route to recover money from one of the country’s biggest financial scandals.
