This week the Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Committee was exploring the new restrictions on fireworks proposed in the Government’s consultation. Are they the right proposals? Do they go far enough? And will change be fast enough? Amongst our witnesses was Alan Friggieri @CombatStress who shared affecting evidence from veterans. “Nothing sounds like an AK47 other than fireworks going off.” Here’s our exchange: #Veterans

Just had a really sophisticated scam call from “Gloucestershire Police”. Correct number. British female voice. Text message to confirm. Really polished script. “We’ve arrested someone who was using your identity to commit financial fraud. Your passport and drivers license was used….” Invites me to come to the police station nearest to me to view the evidence. … then… Wants to confirm the crypto accounts that are genuine … didn’t feel right… she puts me through to her Sargent… British accent… he starts asking for info about my “genuine accounts” … I start asking questions and *click* Did some searching and it seems to be a scam that’s doing the rounds. AI voice alteration, cloned phone numbers etc. really sophisticated. Be careful out there.

Breaking: A former frontline Afghan interpreter for British forces who suffered life-changing injuries after being blown up in Helmand by a Taliban bomb has been denied compensation because of a paperwork error. MoD officials refused to look at his appeal because he sent a council tax bill rather than a utility bill. thetimes.com/article/20355c9…

“Let’s do it. Let’s try to call the president.” @DashaBurns and @politico colleagues with some high risk, very real and very brilliant journalism here. That wait while Trump’s phone rings… If you’re ever in doubt as a reporter, do this. Think big and just try it.
“I don’t want to be just sitting there for two years vetoing everything.” President Donald Trump picked up a call from @DashaBurns on POLITICO Elections Live and talked to us about the blue wave and how he’s willing to work with incoming congressional Democrats.  Watch live now: politi.co/4AgCofb

There are people who put a lot of effort into their home for Halloween and there is this guy.
Halloween Costume of the Night This dog wins Halloween costume of the night. Nothing can beat this. He doesn't look too happy about it, but I hope he gets a nice bone and plenty of treats when it's all over. What's the best pet costume you've seen tonight?

In 1987, Patrick Stewart refused to unpack his suitcase for six straight weeks. My throat still tightens every time I read why. Every Hollywood insider told the 47-year-old British stage actor that Star Trek: The Next Generation would be a disaster. Even his closest friend, Ian McKellen, begged him not to throw away his Shakespearean career on a television gamble. Stewart kept his bags packed by the door, waiting to be fired and sent home to London. That "six-week failure" lasted 36 years. Watching him late at night here in Japan, we saw something Hollywood never expected. In Japan, we call this quiet, unbreakable spirit "Fudoshin," an immovable heart under fire. Most action heroes scream and fire weapons to look strong. Captain Picard never needed to raise his voice. Born into deep poverty in Yorkshire, terrified of a violent home, he left school at age 15 and lost all his hair by 19, convinced his life as an actor was over before it began. Yet one English teacher, Cecil Dormand, handed that frightened 12-year-old boy a copy of Shakespeare, said "Read it out loud," and secretly paid for his first drama course. Never forget what happened decades later. On the morning Queen Elizabeth II knighted him as Sir Patrick Stewart, he invited that same retired schoolteacher to sit beside him at his knighthood luncheon. No suitcase left unpacked. No rage on the bridge. Just a cup of Earl Grey tea, a tug of his uniform, and three quiet words that commanded the galaxy: "Make it so." He passed away at 86 surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, and laughter. And this December, in Avengers: Doomsday, Professor X will grace the screen one final time. A boy who thought he wouldn't last six weeks in Hollywood gave the world an eternity of nobility. From Japan, with tears and our deepest salute: Thank you, Captain. Engage. ✨🖖🇯🇵

This seems like a great time to reshare my favourite Sir Patrick Stewart performance, ‘What has the ECHR ever done for us?’ It’s just perfect in every possible way … including the ending 😂😂😂 RIP. 🎥 The Guardian

Chancellor announcing an ‘everyday fix’ removing import duties which “could save £21 a year” on marmalade, gherkins & boiled sweets is too funny for me to be mad at. What.

The list sent by Harold Wilson to his cabinet of “little things that mean a lot”, including the protection of pubs, concessionary fares for the elderly, empty office blocks and “the future of the pint”. Echoes of this in Burnham’s small but popular policies today.
