Time flies... last month was the 10th anniversary of the first base editing report, published in @Nature, led by Alexis Komor in the lab of @davidrliu.
A worthy excuse then to re-post this fun 60-minute interview with Alexis and @NicoleGaudelli on the origins of base editing.
Thrilled to release the latest episode of #Guidepost--starring Alexis Komor & Nicole Gaudelli--on the remarkable origins of Base Editing.
Unquestionably the best episode so far!

In the 2000s, @MattRVerse saw tech skyrocketing—except clinical dx. Then 2 tragic genetic diagnoses in his family changed it all. So, he founded @NateraGenetics & @myomeinc to enable preemptive medical intervention.
A rare mix: deep tech + deeply human.

In April 2024, Ricky Chu got the call no parent is ready for: his almost-5-year-old son Skyler had Hunter syndrome (MPS II), a rare genetic disease with no cure. Within weeks, baby brother Ollie was diagnosed too—launching the Chu family into a whirlwind of insurance battles, international travel, and a race against time for treatment. Today, after nearly a dozen trips to the U.K. and infusions of a first-in-human gene therapy, both boys are mobile, verbal, bilingual—and living proof that relentless hope can rewrite the odds.
There's a second side to the story, which goes back a decade before Ricky ever got the call. For over a decade, researcher Brian Bigger, clinicians Simon Jones and Rob Wynn (@MFTnhs), and Andrew McFadyen (The Isaac Foundation) have been in a battle to fund research, navigate clinical trials, and bring hope to children living with one of the rarest neurodegenerative diseases on the planet.
This feature was incredibly impactful and eye-opening for me as to the almost insurmountable battle for rare disease families and patients to get life-saving care.
