A selection of @TheSpectator specimens I’m sharing with students in the class I’m teaching at @Hillsdale. One student astutely remarked that the British press seems even more “American” than the American press, based on how Tocqueville characterizes American vs. French papers.

Libertarians have disappeared from American politics. Their think tanks and magazines are richly endowed but irrelevant, their ideas exhausted. What happened to champions of free markets and free people?

Kushner bought the land for $120 million from a suspected Albanian drug trafficker, Artur Shehu, who fled to Miami after a gunfight in his uncle’s bar. It is alleged that Shehu used fraudulent Ottoman-era land records to claim great swaths of coastal property for himself, though Shehu’s lawyer has insisted that he is neither a drug dealer nor a land thief.

In what has become known as the Flamingo Revolution, thousands of Albanians took to the streets in Tirana earlier this year to condemn Kushner’s property ambitions and the Albanian politicians who stand to gain from them. The protests are expected to gather momentum this fall as Albanians renew calls for their Socialist party Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign. Not since communism was dissolved has Albania been shaken by such collective outrage. The Flamingo Revolution is now in its 15th week.
In my guesthouse in Nartë, on the edge of the disputed peninsula, I was served milk curds and maize bread for breakfast. An abandoned indoor market and Hoxha-era cinema added to the town’s air of dereliction. The inhabitants are mostly ethnic Greek Albanian. They are not against tourism but object to the secrecy and disinformation that surrounds the Kushner development. “VIP tourism of Kushner’s sort will only destroy our way of life,” said Esmeralda Berberi, who runs a corner store. “The Americans are not welcome.” At night in the guesthouse I was awoken by the howling of jackals.

“Third Worldhood spreads its tentacles everywhere. Now it has come back home—back, I mean, to the First World where it was invented.” Shiva Naipaul wrote this in 1985, and the Spectator has kindly republished it: spectator.com/article/myth-t…

More than 7,000 Americans died in the wars that followed 9/11. One was from my hometown. If we want to understand the 9/11 era -- and the choices America made -- that collective loss is a big part. nytimes.com/2026/08/31/us/po…

Americans love their killers. Still, Luigi Mangione, who shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson dead in December 2024, may be the most beloved of them all.
It took a special sort of fetishist to see something in maniacs like Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer, who killed for no reason other than their sadistic compulsions. Mangione, though? Nearly every American has been ground down by our country's healthcare system.
