.@michaelbd said this is a monster from from why liberalism failed, I’ll go him one better- it’s straight out of Peter Mair’s Ruling the Void, a state trying to pass micromanagement of private behaviour off as governance because it’s all they’ve got left

The domestic foundation of American global power is crumbling. Trump is less the cause than a symptom and an accelerant. Since the Cold War ended, the United States has pursued global primacy under an implicit bargain with the public: dominance would come cheap. Today Americans are no more willing to bear serious costs for foreign policy than they were in the 1990s. But a far more competitive world is driving up the price of upholding U.S. commitments. No matter who wins the White House in 2028, this gap will constrain American power around the world. In a new @CarnegieEndow paper, I trace the U.S. foreign-policy consensus from the Cold War to the present and outline three scenarios for the future:

Unfortunately, the Right has spent years promoting the notion that dialogue or diplomacy --- any dialogue or diplomacy --- is tantamount to "appeasement." And pretending that every moment we live through is the 1930s redux.
SECRETARY RUBIO: People need to grow up when it comes to foreign policy a little bit. I don't think it's unusual for the three most powerful, nuclear-armed nations on Earth to have their leaders communicate with each other.

I know for coders it’s very different but AI mostly does things for me that wouldn’t be done at all without AI because it lowers the cost and effort of doing them. Many minorly helpful things I would ask a secretary or PA to do if I could afford one or was assigned one.

I’ll give two examples. I used to use little metal Book Darts to mark passages in physical books. This was handy for me to go back and more quickly browse those books for passages and research. Now my daughter can go through those books for me and photograph every page I marked and we can upload the photos to an AI and it can create searchable digital notes on the passages I marked. Second, language learning. I wanted to brush up my rudimentary French. Now I translate a few sentences, it corrects me. Then it makes a native recording of the texts for me, divided into short units. It then grabs free recordings of Bach fugues and creates a single 60 minutes MP3 alternating between 4 minutes of native french and a Fugue, then drops the file onto a swim ready headphone set I use at the gym pool. It can then estimate how many times I heard the target setences. It also then makes digital flash card decks.

People who prophecy that we will hand over all powers of justice and the distribution of resources to a superintelligent AI whose determinations cannot be scrutinized by us are not theorizing about a new technology, but a different humanity. nationalreview.com/2026/10/d…

"Efficiency," as every libertarian knows, is when a statist command economy subsidizes its producers and manipulates its currency enough to underprice competitors burdened by the need to generate a market return, building enough capacity in the process to satisfy 100% of global demand for advanced manufactured goods. Of course we must accept those goods duty-free - doing anything else would be socialism. I think I read that in Hayek. Back in reality, China's global trade surplus is growing *because* we're tariffing them. Our tariffs put pressure on Chinese producers, which employ Chinese consumers. Producer stress is consumer stress, which means the Chinese domestic market ends up generating less and less demand. Producers can only survive by increasing exports to make up for anemic domestic consumption. But the US market is no longer available to them - so they have to flood everyone else. If a tidal wave of Chinese imports were so efficient, they would unlock growth in receiving countries who would count their blessings and laugh at our mistake. Nope - other countries are freaking out about the deindustrialization these imports are unleashing. They're following our lead by rushing to develop their own tariffs on China. Now that US tariffs have redirected the fire hose of Chinese exports toward everyone else, a natural anti-China trade bloc is forming because of the impact of these distorted, subsidized exports. Maybe the Cato people can let the Europeans know they're making a big mistake. I'm sure there's an Adam Smith quote that covers this. At root, the libertarian error is to see free trade with China as capitalism and tariffs as socialism. It's exactly the opposite. Importing Chinese goods means importing their subsidies, their currency manipulation, and their industrial policy, letting these distortions determine prices in our country. Tariffs preserve our capitalist system by ensuring that prices reflect free competition between firms rather than Beijing's decision to subsidize a strategic industry. The real socialists are the ones who want a socialist state to determine who wins and who loses in the American economy.
The US has been running a real-life experiment to test this theory since 2018. Higher tariffs on Chinese goods have coincided with rising, not falling, Chinese trade surpluses. So you're just raising taxes on Americans and creating inefficiency for no reason.

When Jenny sleeps with Forest and then absconds with their baby for years without telling him.
What are the greatest “you have absolutely no idea who you’re messing with” scenes in movie history? When some arrogant punk picks a fight with the wrong person and realizes far too late that they’re completely out of their depth. The bar fight in JACK REACHER and the biker bar scene in TERMINATOR 2 are perfect examples. What other scenes belong on this list?

Houellebecq's dig at the left was to present them as irrelevant losers. The insult to the right was arguably more devastating, since he presented them as being outdone at their own project of civilizational renewal by their primary nemesis, Islam. xitter.cf/g_shullenberger/status…
Houellebecq’s “Submission” was hated by the left, but seems like its real joke is at the expense of postliberal Christian “civilizationists.” The Muslim leader Ben Abbes turns out to be the only one capable of delivering a postliberal order; Christians end up superfluous.

MBD makes a case for a political party as a *political* party--not an ideological one.
Everybody wants a read on whether Donald Trump is dragging the GOP to simple disaster or utter doom in the midterms. But in @nytopinion, I argue that by smashing the grip of any one faction on the GOP, Trump has put the party in position to grow as a baggier, more ideologically-incoherent coalition. nytimes.com/2026/10/19/opini…
