"Southern Water invests £1 million into wetlands project that will use nature - not chemicals - to clean wastewater". Here we go, yet more greenwashing from river environment charities and the water companies. It doesn't work and they know it, the science says it doesn't work but not that any of that matters when you're a river charity with a £3 million payroll bill to fund and need to keep the money rolling in. "Harbour saw 1,200 hours of sewage in a month." Chichester Harbour is one of the most heavily protected sites in the country and this is what happens. We desperately need a regulatory system capable of doing its job for this one if broken, badly. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3g2…

Water companies want bills to increase by £156 a year by 2030 to pay for upgrades and reduce sewage discharges. So, they massively underinvest for years, destroy the environment, pay out huge dividends, and now want us to pay to clean up their mess....💩 buff.ly/3EZcn9r

Now there is truly shocking statistic. 167 hours elapsed between the showing of episode 1 and 2 of Paul's brilliant documentary yet during that time @SouthernWater managed to dump the equivalent of 931 hours worth of sewage along the south-east coast of England.
167 hours elapsed between episodes 1 and 2 of 'Paul Whitehouse: Our Troubled Rivers'. In that time @SouthernWater released 81 hours of sewage into the sea in Whitstable and 931 hours across the entire south-east. The battle is just beginning.

And here's @SouthernWater's contribution to mankind this morning. More sewage being dumped onto more beaches polluting even more seas. I note they are still refusing to publish their inland sewage dumping data. "Exceptional situations"? Feel free to explain @SouthernWater.

The definition of ‘exceptional circumstances’ was lost by our illiterate government. This MUST change now. Sewage now regularly gets dumped in the sea regardless of whether it’s been raining. This is a crime.
Short 🧵 on sewage: Following a complaint, in 2012 the EU Commission took the UK Gov to the European Court Justice over allowing water companies to dump sewage into rivers. Court ruled it was illegal and that sewage overflows should only ever be used in "exceptional situations"
