Speaking out against the #LoanCharge. 100,000 people are being denied their statutory rights because, in HMRC’s “opinion”, they don’t deserve a fair hearing.

Who has "settled"? I paid HMRC to "settle" 2010-2011, they now want money to settle the Loan Charge and claim to do this I must have settled all earlier years, yet will not put in writing that they won't come after me for 2010/11 again!!! @cammaynard @loanchargeAPPG @LCAG_2019

The compensation bill for the Post Office Scandal has now reached £1.7bn. Every UK taxpayer has paid £44. Yet in 2014, the PO started mediation that could have settled claims at a fraction. They blew it. It was treated as a box-ticking exercise and a fishing expedition.

Two of the traders convicted of LIBOR manipulation, Jay Merchant and Christian Bittar, were deported from the UK and barred from returning. Earlier this month, the Court of Appeal threw out their convictions leaving the reason for their deportation completely invalid. Unfortunately, the deportation order will remain in place until it is removed by the Home Office. Both men have applied to have the order revoked, and I asked the Home Office earlier to look into their cases and respond as soon as possible, not imposing any further undeserved punishment on these men.

The bonkers 'logic' here is HMRC claims they are 'helping' the taxpayer 'customer' by launching a ongoing and perpetual tax investigation. How deluded can a government department get.

The scandal of the #LoanChargeScandal - not one promoter has been punished, meanwhile ordinary people’s lives are in tatters.
Read this twice "There are [have been] NO convictions of loan scheme promoters". I.E. the organisations who are known to have made billions by mis-selling payroll schemes to real workers, while HMRC watched silently until many years later trying to ruin those same workers

I'd like to make a statement on behalf of the recipients of this inflamatory letter who may be too polite or shy to respond. @HMRCgovuk @HMRCcustomers We don't want a 'relationship' with anyone in your department whatsoever. We, through our tax advisers, will pay what is legally due, not a penny less and certainly not a penny more. Then we want you to fuck off out of our lives.

HMRC has made 41 referrals to the police watchdog involving Loan Charge cases of serious injury or loss of life. It investigated every one internally. It found no misconduct, every time.

I don’t have £2 million in assets, and I don’t earn £200k a year. I’m quite short on both counts. So the HMRC wealth audit doesn’t impact me. Yet. But it signals a clear intention. A lack of respect for the individual. What is yours is only yours until the government decides they want it to fund further welfare expansion. Property rights only exist in this country as long as your holdings are meagre enough to escape the fiscal Eye of Sauron. They will come for it all.

People are suddenly shocked that HMRC can revisit historic tax affairs. Contractors have been living with that reality for years. IR35 enquiries, retrospective assessments, interest and penalties attracted little public sympathy. The powers aren't new. The attention is.

HMRC wants to cut the time to reclaim overpaid National Insurance from 6 years to 4. It also wants up to 20 years to chase unpaid NI where errors were deliberate. Same HMRC that wants to take money straight from bank accounts.

A MEETING FOR BILLIONAIRES HMRC's Wealthy Team has written to a few hundred billionaires asking what they own, offering a meeting first, The @SundayTimesZA reports. For smaller debts, HMRC wants wider powers to take money from bank accounts.. Same taxman. Two rulebooks. lbc.co.uk/article/hmrc-askin…

This letter could have been drafted much better. It could have clearly set out that it was a fully voluntary arrangement. It could have confirmed that lack of compliance does not increase the chance of enquiry, but it is likely to reduce the severity and depth as HMRC would be more familiar with your situation. It could have explained the positive steps HMRC is taking to improve taxpayers' experience when enquiries do arise. But instead the choices made by the draftsman imply a sword of Damocles-style "comply or else" situation. That's bad for our tax system, and an opportunity missed. thetimes.com/money/tax/artic…

Frankly I'm already thinking of removing my money from the UK because of this and I pay all my taxes. It's just too much of a risk with no burden of proof and complex/slow recourse (if any in reality).

£12.9BN WRITTEN OFF. SMALL DEBTS NEXT. HMRC stopped chasing £12.9bn of tax in 2025-26, @NAOorguk says. That's triple 2019-20. The same report says HMRC will expand direct recovery powers to go after lower-value debts. The big money is gone. The small money gets chased. telegraph.co.uk/money/tax/ne…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Hartley Pensioners Call on MPs to Investigate £40 Million of Public Funding and Years of Regulatory Failures Parliamentary briefing urges support for Early Day Motion 506 A group of Hartley Pension members has today written to Members of Parliament urging them to support Early Day Motion 506 and to press for Parliamentary scrutiny of the Hartley Pensions administration, following the Financial Conduct Authority's recent enforcement action against former Hartley directors. The group has circulated a four-page briefing summarising issues that have emerged during ongoing High Court proceedings. edm.parliament.uk/early-day-… The briefing argues that the case has grown far beyond the collapse of a single pension provider. It raises questions about the conduct of insolvency practitioners, the stewardship of approximately £40 million of Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) funding, regulatory oversight, and the handling of thousands of pension members' retirement savings. Among the issues highlighted are evidence presented in court concerning approximately £37 million of unauthorised movements of pension cash affecting more than 1,300 pension members, together with evidence that approximately £836 million of pension assets had not been fully reconciled before Hartley entered administration. The briefing also points to continuing uncertainty affecting thousands of pension members who remain unable to transfer or access investments held within their SIPPs. The document also highlights allegations made in related High Court proceedings concerning the conduct of certain insolvency office-holders and the management of witness evidence. Those allegations remain matters before the courts. The briefing contends that, if established, they would raise wider questions about confidence in insolvency regulation and the administration of justice. The briefing further questions why the FSCS reversed its position within weeks, moving from refusing to fund the administration in December 2023 to approving approximately £40 million of funding in January 2024. It also asks whether sufficient Parliamentary oversight exists where substantial public funds are committed while interconnected insolvency administrations and complex forensic investigations continue. Simon Nuttall, speaking on behalf of affected pension members, said: “Thousands of Hartley pension members have now lived with uncertainty for several years. Many remain unable to access or transfer their retirement savings while litigation, regulatory action and insolvency proceedings continue." “Our briefing does not ask Parliament to interfere with ongoing court proceedings. It asks MPs to examine whether wider questions of public policy, regulatory oversight and the use of public funds now warrant independent Parliamentary scrutiny." “This is about restoring confidence that the systems designed to protect pension savers are operating effectively and transparently.” The group is encouraging affected pension members across the United Kingdom to send the briefing to their constituency MPs and ask them to support Early Day Motion 506, which calls for Parliamentary scrutiny of the Hartley Pensions administration and the wider issues arising from it.
