Cornelious Brown is 26 years old and in his eighth season of college football. In those eight years he has played 43 games. That is not even four full seasons worth. Saturday he threw for 417 yards and five touchdowns and ran in a sixth, and Alabama A&M won 61 to 31 on homecoming. His teammates call him Unc. Here is why it took him eight years. He started at Georgia State as a freshman and sat. The next year he got the job, threw for more than two thousand yards, accounted for 24 touchdowns and was the most valuable player of a bowl game. Then he lost the job. He played five games the following season in a reduced role, moved to UT Martin, and then came to Alabama A&M, where he got hurt after two games. Then last year it happened again. Four games in, against Jackson State, he tore three ligaments in his ankle on what he says was an illegal low hit. He had the surgery during Magic City Classic week, which is the biggest game on his program's calendar. He was not there for it. That was his third operation in three years. Here is what he says about the moment he got hurt. "As soon as I got hurt, I started thinking about next year." In April the NCAA granted him a medical hardship waiver and gave him this season. The reason was the arithmetic. Eight years, 43 games. He did not enter the transfer portal. He stayed. Here is what he said about why. "I just wanted to really finish what I started here at A&M." While he waited he earned a master's degree in business administration. Steven J. Gaither at HBCU Gameday and Mia Berry at Andscape are the two who reported all of this. Now, about his age. People have had plenty to say about a 26 year old playing college football, and he has heard all of it. "I don't think they understand the fact that I've only played two full seasons of football." "Hate is great." His father is Cornelious Brown III, who played Division I basketball at Arkansas State. "Adversity is a part of playing high-level sports." Here is how his son describes him. "He has always believed for me." Now the honest part. Alabama A&M put up 669 yards on Grambling State and this was not a close game, so a huge afternoon against that defense is worth less than the number looks. He is eight years into chasing something that may never arrive. And nobody made him stay. But he has played 43 games in eight years and had three operations, and he is still out there at 26, standing in front of a locker room full of kids at the end of every practice. Here is the line he keeps coming back to. "Trouble don't last always, and I really believe that."
