I'm anti-spam. That's why 10 years ago I supported a small block size to create a fee market for block inclusion.

So we are going to allow riots and criminal destruction of private and public property in our streets? What if the farmers rioted every day until we wire every farmer €1bn to their personal account? Would we just accept that as well? Fuck this. We need food not riots.
This is what opposition to the EU-Mercosur trade deal looks like: hundreds of angry farmers in Brussels setting fires and smashing windows. They complain of unfair competition & are furious at the EU. Others warn derailing the deal now would be a geopolitical disaster for Europe.

Another nuance to The Cat that I just thought of. It's effectively an imposed fee rate on non-monetary UTXOs. It says: you can keep your spam as long as you lock up enough sats in doing so. It's therefore not even freezing or confiscation. It's just setting a network-level value threshold on non-monetary UTXOs. And if they don't want to meet that threshold, it's a donation to the rest of the network. Both in terms of the freed UTXO and the sats. Regardless, I advise consolidation and reverting to using Bitcoin as it was meant to be used. I still want to emphasize, this isn't a full endorsement of the proposal. Just some more thoughts about what it really means in practice. If the Bitcoin network comes together to implement this proposal, I believe it will be good for the network. It remains divisive, so I don't know how likely that is. I can hope, though. I still like The Cat.

cashu is an ethically questionable project, and I think people should bash it to some extent It's based on deception. All of the technical verbiage , "chaumian eCash", website, documentation, etc -- is all a song and dance, to shroud the fact that it is custodial. Thus, it is a "stair-based elevator", just like custodial lightning. With cashu, you send real BTC to the mint, and get back only an IOU. The cryptography does NOT help you honor the IOU -- it just hides who owns which IOUs. This is underwhelming to say the least. It is like saying "our stair-based elevator gives you a nice view of the area". Chaumian mints will probably be used for something, eventually -- but until the lies stop, it is perfectly reasonable for @1440000bytes to try to destroy the project. After all, if I had criticized the Lightning Network earlier, we would probably be at $500k per coin today. I would question the ethics of anyone investing in or shilling cashu -- sorry to say. They are too blasé -- about the truth, about technological excellence, about the Bitcoin ethos, the rugpull risk, etc. Just my opinion, sorry not sorry

Is Bitcoin in danger? I hesitate to share this, because I know it's going to get some people upset. But, at this point, I feel like it needs to be said, so that people can understand what I believe is happening, and what I believe the solution is. Do I think Core v30 is harming Bitcoin? As much as I'd love to say no, I can't. I do believe the implementation war stemming from the mishandling of the upgrades from Core is having a meaningful, detrimental impact to Bitcoin - both from a price perspective and from a viability perspective. Let me clarify. This isn't "killing" Bitcoin. Bitcoin can't be killed. But it is becoming less useful for the purpose in which it was built - the purpose that ONLY Bitcoin can fulfill - to end central banking. I want to also say, upfront, that I am not even insinuating that Knots fixes this. Because the problem I see has very little to do with the technical relay policy. The "problem" is that a small group of people are trying to change Bitcoin, and this is happening on both sides of the Core/Knots war. This is a false dichotomy that we were all tricked into. It's like choosing a side in any war. Usually the best side is just to simply not have the war (but incentives get the best of us). The first point I want to make is that you don't have to believe the lie that you have to choose between Core and Knots. Both of them are modifying how Bitcoin is used. Neither of them are proposing to leave Bitcoin alone. That brings me to my second point. The answer (in my opinion) is to just stop. That's it. Just STOP! Leave Bitcoin alone. It is already on the path to end central banking and liberate the entire planet of financial repression. So, for goodness sake, LEAVE IT ALONE. Thirdly, I want to propose an actionable solution. If you agree with me, would you let me know? Would you support a 3rd viable option? You know, something that isn't Core or Knots and just intended to leave the base layer protocol and relay policy alone? My proposal is to simply use the most popular implementation (Core v28) and popularize it as the new standard. It should be a formal project with household brand name to make it easy for people to recognize (Core v28 just doesn't do it). Then, if a change MUST be made, they have to convince us - all of us. They need to make us LEAVE and adopt a new implementation, instead of just willfully and ignorantly "updating" to the most recent version. This "new" implementation won't have updates. It won't have maintainers. It won't have developers to bribe. There will be no donations or funding. No venture capital. It is just a rock-solid foundation for the rest of humanity to build on top of. What do you say? Are you in?

Let me get this straight. Bitcoin core development team decides to lower the minimum relay fee (meant to prevent cheap spam) by 1000x. They do this in the middle of controversy regarding spam, while making the claim "filters don't work anyway". As a side-effect, services running older versions of core cannot see sub-sat txs in the mempool (because they get filtered out), which breaks zero-conf payment flows. Instead of reverting the breaking change, core development decides to *backport* the policy change to older versions of core (!!!), mixed in with security patches. Even though the original change was unnecessary and incompatible with the filters of older versions. So refusing to download v30 is not enough to rebuke policy changes? You are just going to push them on me anyway? What is the point of doing all this? Because blocks are empty?

Must watch, must listen, but most importantly must comprehend. You need your brain turned on for this one. This is not a cute picture, a funny gif, or movie snippet. Listen to Mechanic explain the 'file storage' aspect of Bitcoin. Note the applause. The problem is, no one cares. It's obvious. How? There are so few of us who actually run nodes, who actually care. You say you care by running a node. But the caring is only proved if you are running Knots or hopefully an even better version soon? If you run Bitcoin Core V30 OR all the 'patched' previous versions, you are a bad actor in the Bitcoin Play that should have no intermission and should never end. Me as a customer to the Bitcoin Core Waiter: "Sorry, I can't eat this Word Salad, I need a soft fork in order to consume it and be happy customer."
That sure was an enthusiastic applause for @GrassFedBitcoin at @LuganoPlanB today. Gives me hope in bitcoiners 🙂

Gm. Ordinals are a disgrace. I am so fed up. There is nothing to say at this point, really. The entire Ordinals eco is made up of class A grifters. The platforms are blind, and do not care. They support anything and everything, in the name of fee extractions. I'm over it.

i read the luke dashjr hit piece. it's wrong. basically the entire article is wrong. i'm (obviously) not on luke's side, but guys this is just a sloppy low quality propaganda piece. first of all: sharing private messages is not cool. for many obvious ethical reasons. but one reason that is often overlooked is that sharing private messages often puts them out of context and makes it easy to construct a false narrative without understanding the conversation with that, let's look deeper into the article published by "the rage": the rage: "dashjr... proposes the implementation of a multisig quorum on bitcoin that grants a designated group of people the ability to retroactively alter data that is hosted on the blockchain" there is no discussion of "altering the data that is stored on the blockchain" anywhere in the screenshots provided. luke discusses a hypothetical mechanism that would allow knots node operators to avoid downloading "spam" that's already in blocks. imagine a hypothetical knots client that syncs blocks with a delay of eg 1 hour. when it downloads a block (late, on purpose), it pings luke's server and asks, "hey, is there any spam in this 1 hour old block?". luke's server responds with a list of transaction IDs that contain "spam", and provides a "zero knowledge proof" that proves to knots nodes that those "spam" transactions are valid, without having to download them. this is the magic of zk proofs and we don't need to get into how it works. suffice to say that the reason bitcoin nodes download transactions is to verify that they're valid, and if there's a way to verify without downloading them then the node can continue functioning without having to download the "spam". so now knots have a mechanism to avoid "spam" on their computer while still validating the chain. this doesn't remove the "spam" for the chain. it is still available on clients that don't run knots (70%+ of the network). core nodes continue to function as normal, with "spam" and with no issues, and continue to be in sync with knots nodes. the only difference is that the knots nodes can avoid ever downloading "spam", while staying on the same network the rage: "luke dashjr plans hard fork" this isn't true and it's a misunderstanding of what luke is saying. his messages do not describe a plan to hard fork bitcoin. he's referring to a technicality, saying that whenever knots nodes use a mechanism like the hypothetical knots node i described above, every time they avoid downloading a transaction they technically hard fork. but just technically, not really. it doesn't split the network, and those hypothetical knots nodes remain fully compatible with core nodes. core nodes can continue to verify, their chain is not censored, and they're fully synced with knots nodes. the rage: “right now the only options would be bitcoin dies or we have to trust someone,” dashjr writes. The proposed solution would require a consensus change, activating a bitcoin hardfork. the quote about "we have to trust someone" is taken out of context. luke is literally saying in the convo that thanks to zk proofs and his proposed solution, they would NOT need to trust anyone. the second part about a consensus change is made up. nothing in the screenshots suggests a consensus change. and i explained above that the "hard fork" bit is just a technicality. in this hypothetical design, there would be no chain split, and core nodes would remain compatible and uncensored. the rage: dashjr reveals that public letters are being drafted by third parties to seemingly support the sanctioning of illegal content on the entire Bitcoin network. the leaked conversation does not AT ALL mention a public letter that supports sanctioning illegal content "on the entire bitcoin network". luke is asked by his conversation partner a legal question, whether or not an op_return relay network will be perceived by authorities as illegal. luke replies that he can't answer that question because he's not a lawyer, but his understanding is that a group is working on a formal letter that addresses that legal question. as far as I can tell that hypothetical letter is a simple "legal opinion", not a letter that calls for sanctioning transactions on bitcoin. 🔸🔸🔸🔸 fyi, they hypothetical design of a knots node that i provide above is just that: hypothetical. the leaked dms don't go into implementation details at all so i had to fill in the blanks. luke might've had some other design in mind. but my description is conceptually correct, and the article's isn't. you can go back to the leaked screenshots and re-read them and tell me if anything there contradicts the hypothetical design I offered (nothing does). also, an important point is that the entire leaked convo is hypothetical. people are allowed to have hypothetical conversations. that doesn't mean there's some conspiracy. everyone I know that discusses this issue in private has brought up all kinds of weird ideas to me that doesn't mean they actually plan to implement them. 🔸🔸🔸🔸 my conclusion is that this article is a hit piece, and not a particularly good one. the most charitable explanation i can come up with is that the author misunderstood the leaked messages and wrote the incorrect article based on that misunderstanding but honestly it really seems that this isn't the case, it seems like the author was employing a lot of motivated reasoning to arrive at the conclusions in the article. the goal was to make luke bad, and his words were manipulated for maximum effect this isn't the first time "the rage" is doing this. last time it was a fake news article claiming that google is about to ban self-custody wallets from the android app store. it was based on the author's borderline malicious interpretation of the google store rules, to make them look like they're against self-custody. that was incorrect, but the fake news article got so viral that google itself had to issue a clarification saying that they have not and will not ban self-custody wallets from the android store. 🔸🔸🔸🔸 perhaps most disappointing was seeing many big names from the "anti-knots" camp jumping on this and declaring that luke is working on a hard fork, that "they knew it" and that soon we will be getting "airdrop fork coins" to sell. all of those things are false. this is, as always, a nothing burger. it's pretty obvious to me that this proposal never gets implemented, and even if it did, it does not censor the network and does not split the network, and remains fully compatible with core. it's actually, dare i say it, a pretty good hypothetical solution (to a problem that doesn't matter). i wish they'd implement it. but they probably won't. do better everyone.

Users understand that these things *can* and *are* being mined by centralized mining entities running Stratum v1, which, are about 90-95% of hashing power on the network. It's the decentralized p2p network mining, the part we all want to grow, that the Core software affects. Treating users as some simpletons that don't understand what the network is mining after 4 months of debate is patronizing. Users understand what's going on. They're not dumb. They just don't agree with the assessment of Core developers that deprecating datacarriersize and setting it to 100k bytes is a good thing.
In the Knots Vs Core debate, people are missing a few ground truths: 1. 400KB JPEGs via the taproot inscription envelope is already standard, and already being relayed by a majority of nodes. 2. Due to librerelay, 100KB OP RETURN is already possible to relay. People are incorrectly acting like somehow Core v30 is uniquely enabling these things.
