UEDCL Upgrades Kawanda Power Line to Improve Electricity Reliability in Greater Kampala The Government, through the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), is undertaking network upgrades and capacity enhancements to improve electricity supply reliability in Greater Kampala and surrounding areas. At Kawanda Substation, UEDCL is upgrading the interconnecting power line following the allocation of additional electricity capacity by the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL). The intervention is intended to address capacity-related outages affecting Kakiri, Kawempe, Matugga, Bombo, Namugongo, Magigye, Gayaza, Manyangwa, Nakwero, Namulonge and neighbouring communities. According to UEDCL Area Engineer, Eng. Peter Mwondha, the project involves replacing the initially planned underground copper cable with an overhead line to improve security, ease maintenance and minimise disruptions associated with cable theft and vandalism. “ Our teams have already erected 17 pole structures and are currently stringing the lines. Completion is expected this weekend. Once finalised, power reliability will significantly improve for more than 4,000 customers in Kakiri, Kawempe and Namulonge,” Eng. Mwondha said. He appealed to the public to keep away from active construction sites and report electricity theft and vandalism of power infrastructure to UEDCL, local authorities or the nearest police station. The upgrade is part of a broader package of immediate, short-, medium- and long-term interventions being implemented by UEDCL to address persistent electricity supply challenges in Greater Kampala and Wakiso District. UEDCL Acting Managing Director, Eng. Joselynne R. Rwabwogo, acknowledged that some communities continue to experience significant supply constraints, particularly in the Greater Bombo area, where limitations at Kawanda Substation and Magigye affect service delivery. She revealed that UETCL and UEDCL are at an advanced stage of implementing an expansion of Kawanda Substation from 40 MVA to 80 MVA, targeted for completion before the end of 2026. In addition, land has been acquired for the construction of Matugga Substation, while the required equipment is under manufacture. The investment is expected to substantially ease electricity supply constraints in the area by the second quarter of 2027. Along the Hoima Road corridor, including Wakiso and Nansana, rapid industrial and residential growth has increased electricity demand beyond the existing network capacity. To address this, a contractor is mobilising to construct a second power line from Kakiri Substation, where an additional transformer has already been installed. UEDCL says these interventions form part of ongoing investments to strengthen the electricity distribution network, accommodate growing demand and deliver more reliable power to households, businesses and industries. The Government continues to prioritise investments in electricity infrastructure to support economic activity, service delivery and improved quality of life. @UEDCLTD

Kudos to @PoliceUg Fire Brigade, for rescuing us when our house caught fire 🔥 in Kira Munipality. Despite the rain & crazy jam, the team of 15 in 2 fire trucks arrived on time! I want to give them their flowers 💐 because they never asked for a coin after taking my statement!

Power reliability in the Rwenzori region is set to improve as UEDCL launches the UGX 16 billion Nkenda–Ishaka Reliability Improvement Project. The investment will upgrade critical distribution infrastructure, reduce outages, strengthen electricity supply, and support economic growth in Kasese, Rubirizi and Bushenyi districts. #OpenGovUg

We keep it here. It has been over 20 years down the road. Can't continue losing business and be treated like secondary citizens. There's a mast at about 2 1/2 km from Kachumbala CBD but we have suffered with connectivity for past 20 years! Enough is enough 😌 – at Machaku, Kenya

Replying to @mtnug @OOmunyo
Hello, Bukedea has no stable network, have you also decided to marginalize us like PLU? Come and fix your network faster than light or take away your masts!

I noted the remarkable growth in UEDCL’s customer base from approximately 178,000 customers to about 2.4 million, now exceeding 2.7 million connections, as well as the successful transition of experienced technical staff to ensure continuity of operations during this sensitive period. I also commended the operational and financial growth registered during the year under review, including revenues rising to approximately UGX 669.4 billion alongside increased electricity sales following the expansion of the company’s operational footprint.

I commended the Board, Management and staff for steering the transition process and reaffirmed @GovUganda’s commitment to building a strong, efficient, financially sustainable and customer-centred national distribution utility. At the same time, I emphasised the need for stronger governance, faster project execution, improved procurement efficiency and better customer service delivery to ensure Ugandans receive the quality and reliability of electricity supply they deserve.

A great Lady there! I was also privileged to work with her during my media days! A Lady of her word! No fitina! A blessed birthday @SusanMuhwezi
Happy birthday to my mentor, Mrs Susan Muhwezi. @SusanMuhwezi She gave me my first opportunity to work issues of development (Trade, Investment, Economic growth) as a young economist in her office. Gave me the space to learn, make mistakes and grow, and through it all, protected me as a young professional. I learnt so much from her on how to be a Leader, and never to be afraid to let young people take initiative. Forever grateful for her guidance and mentorship so early in my career.
