Navaguñjara: Many Forms, One Vision What is the extraordinary creature featured in the announcement of our MA in Mahābhārata Studies? Meet Navaguñjara, a wondrous composite form drawing upon nine different beings, associated with Sarala Dasa's Odia Mahābhārata. In this remarkable manifestation, Śrī Kṛṣṇa reveals himself to Arjuna, inviting him to recognise the divine beyond familiar forms. The choice of Navaguñjara reflects the academic vision of the programme. The Mahābhārata encompasses philosophy, poetry, dharma, politics, ethics, psychology, aesthetics, history, geography, and living traditions. Its study calls for multiple approaches that illuminate and enrich one another. Navaguñjara also reminds us that the Mahābhārata extends beyond any single language, textual tradition, or geography. Its rich and varied expressions across Bhārata form an integral part of its civilisational legacy. The MA in Mahābhārata Studies, offered by Central Sanskrit University in academic collaboration with INDICA, seeks to engage with this extraordinary inheritance through Text · Research · Immersion. Many forms. Many perspectives. One extraordinary Mahābhārata. कूजन्तं रामरामेति मधुरं मधुराक्षरम्‌ । आरुह्य कविताशाखां वन्दे वाल्मीकिकोकिलम्‌ ॥ (Vālmīki is the cuckoo — perched upon the branch of poetry, cooing the name ‘Rama’. I bow to that cuckoo in the form of Vālmīki.) It began with a cry — a krauñcha’s lament that stirred a depth beyond sorrow. Vālmīki’s grief took metrical form as he cursed the fowler. Brahmā himself appeared, reassuring him that Sarasvatī’s manifestation was as per divine will, and commanded him to compose the story of Śrī Rāma in verse. By Brahmā’s grace, all events of Rāma’s life, seen and unseen, became clear to #Vālmīki, and he composed the evergreen poem called #Rāmāyaṇa. Today, on #VālmīkiJayanti, we honor the sage whose words still awaken the heart, illuminate the mind, and make the soul hum with the melody of dharma ~ an article by Dr. Sriram Narainswamy Iyer (@SNarainswamy) @indicatoday indica.today/long-reads/valm… indica.today/bharatiya-langu…

The Arthaśāstra is often read as a manual of cunning. That reading misses its centre. Kauṭilya opens with ānvīkṣikī, disciplined inquiry, as the lamp of all sciences. He makes the ruler’s happiness lie in the happiness of the people. He sees the state as seven interdependent limbs, not a machine of departments. And he insists that power exists to secure the yogakṣema of the governed, their gain and their security. These are first principles, not period pieces. The task before us is to separate what is timeless from what belonged to the Mauryan court, and to rebuild with it: in policy, in institutions, in how we form leaders. That is the arc of Rājadharma Applied, and the theme of today’s Closing Keynote by Prof. B. Mahadevan, “Arthaśāstra: A Vision for the Future.” Not nostalgia. Application. #RajadharmaApplied @SaamaanyaJ

Two days, 40 speakers, one question: How to bring Rajadharma to the mainstream of civilization? Arthashastra might hold the key. The 44th INDICA Online Symposium, Rājadharma Applied, closes today with a Closing Keynote by Prof. B. Mahadevan: “Arthaśāstra: A Vision for the Future.” Across this symposium, scholars and practitioners carried the Rājadharma tradition from text, to taxonomy, to translation, to application. The closing keynote now turns us forward: where must this work go next? Can Arthashastra show the way? Prof. Mahadevan, a professor for three decades at IIM Bangalore, Founder Vice-Chancellor of Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, and co-author of the textbook that brought Indian Knowledge Systems into classrooms across the country, is an exemplary of textual knowledge, embodiment and institutional engagement. Held in memory of Dr. Radhakrishnan Pillai, who made Kauṭilya a teacher for millions. Join us. @IndicaOrg #RajadharmaApplied #Arthashastra #IKS

What is the oldest promise a government makes to its people? The Indian tradition calls it Yogakshema—securing people’s welfare and protecting what they have. At the 44th INDICA Online Symposium, Rājadharma Applied: IKS Lens for Policy, Governance, and Leadership, Shri Pranav Patel, Dean of the Indian Institute of Democratic Leadership (IIDL), an initiative of Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini (RMP), Mumbai, examined Yogakshema as a practical framework for contemporary governance. Drawing on Kauṭilya’s Arthaśāstra and the Bhagavad Gītā, the talk explored four principles of governance: acquiring resources, protecting them, enabling growth, and ensuring their just distribution. It applied these principles to Direct Benefit Transfer, food security, rural employment and the debate on welfare expenditure. The talk also examined how these enduring principles could inform democratic leadership today, with the Constitution providing the foundation for public accountability and the people’s voice.

Can Rājadharma offer a systems-based approach to governance, in which every institution functions as part of an interconnected whole? At the 44th INDICA Online Symposium, Rājadharma Applied: IKS Lens for Policy, Governance, and Leadership, Shri Vinay Kulkarni, Adjunct Faculty, RV Institute for Management, presents Rāṣṭra-Śarīra: The Body of the Nation — Rājadharma as Systems Thinking. Drawing on Kauṭilya’s Arthaśāstra, the Mahābhārata’s Śānti Parva, the Saptāṅga theory of the seven limbs of the state, and the Pañcakośa model, he explored an integrated framework for dharmic governance. It examines how interconnected institutions, coordinated information and collective intelligence can inform policy and state action. The framework also extends to enterprise management, highlighting cross-functional integration and the leader’s role in sustaining the health of the whole organisation.
