Nitin Gadkari has proposed not issuing challans to cars travelling up to 20% above the 120 kmph expressway speed limit, effectively allowing speeds of up to 140 kmph. However, the proposal faces legal and road-safety challenges, as existing rules permit only a 5% margin. Experts warn that higher speeds could increase crash risks and fatalities, noting that over 58% of road crash deaths in India in 2024 were linked to speeding. Any relaxation would require legal changes and scientific safety assessments.

The Railway Board has granted conditional approval to the first 16 coach Vande Bharat chair-car train manufactured at RCF Kapurthala, equipped with an Alstom propulsion system. However, it flagged several safety issues, including single-pole MCBs that must be replaced with double-pole MCBs, a poorly responsive driver touchscreen and loosely secured fire extinguisher cabinet doors. Although the train is approved for 160 kmph, it is currently restricted to 130 kmph. RCF must rectify the defects and provide proper identification labels before full deployment.
