On 26 Oct, 2022, when Kharge took over as Cong prez, party was in doldrums. Its losing streak had not abated, allies were dismissive, Gandhis faced rebellion. As he steps into 5th year of his term today, he can feel satisfied that he has steadied the ship

INTERESTING: In Serbia, student-led protests have ended Aleksandar Vučić’s 12-year grip on power. In Brazil, Lula defeated the odds and Bolsonaro despite Trump backing his rival.
For those drawing parallels with India, a note of caution: political change is never a copy-paste exercise. India has its own institutions, electorate, political culture and social realities. What happens elsewhere cannot be mechanically replicated here.
But one truism of life and politics endures beyond national boundaries : Arrogance invites a reckoning ; humility is the wiser course. Never take the people—or their mandate—for granted in a democracy.🙏

Mumbai has the sea, and for decades the sea breeze cleaned our air. This year it isn’t enough, and for the second time in 2026 our air has been worse than Delhi’s.
The winds have slowed, so the smoke stays with us. Just south of the city, in Alibaug and in the rural belts around Mumbai, garbage is burnt in the open because villages have no system to collect or dispose of it. My sensors recorded PM2.5 above 1,000 next to roadside garbage fires and 300–400 in parts of Alibaug. No official monitor is there to record it. Add crop burning inland, and depending on the winds, the combined impact on Mumbai could be significant.
Then come the firecrackers. Our tests found toxic heavy metals in them, including crackers sold as “green”, and that label means nothing when the rules aren’t enforced. The city gets no time to recover, with Christmas and New Year still ahead. I have written to the Chief Minister documenting firecrackers being burst on roads and footpaths despite the High Court’s ban.
All firecrackers should be banned. Children, the elderly and anyone with breathing problems will suffer first.
The Bombay High Court has called this an emergency, and BMC, MPCB and the police must report on October 26.@CMOMaharashtra @Dev_Fadnavis

This his how the Mumbai skies look now. Not many AQI tweets these days thankfully.

Mumbai's AQI has been worse than Delhi's for the second time this year. The sea breeze that usually helps keep the air clean doesn't seem to be helping much now. Here's what experts have to say about Maximum City's maximum pollution problem.

In a first, Indian Army's combat dog jumps from a plane with handler, paratrooper
A parachute opens high above the ground. Beneath it are not just soldiers, but a dog too — a combat canine, being taken into the air for a descent that could one day have an operational purpose.
An Indian Army paratrooper from Surya Command has carried out a tandem parachute jump over Behat Drop Zone in central India, with a dog handler and his combat canine, carrying a full combat load.

Mumbai's Rs 248-crore Mrinaltai Gore Flyover was meant to make commuting smoother. Instead, bikers are complaining about skidding on its surface, which went from being rough to unusually slick in less than three months. So, why do some Mumbai roads turn shiny, slippery and risky?

Why global brands taste and feel different in India
"There's no rule that mandates companies to sell products with the same specifications in every market." This observation from Mumbai-based food scientist Gauri Chemburkar explains a lot about a question that Indian consumers are asking right now — why do products by global brands that they buy in India taste and feel different from their foreign counterparts?
