And guess where most of the atrazine is used? How about 60% on corn going specifically to animal feed?
SYNGENTA's hormone-disrupting herbicide atrazine is contaminating nearly 25%, or about 860,000 miles, of all continental U.S. rivers at levels that can harm wildlife and threaten human health, a new review of federal records has found. The waterways cover over 20% of surface drinking water intakes across the country, and over 675,000 private and commercial wells. Atrazine can have severe impacts on human and animal hormones, especially for developing children. It was found to “chemically castrate” frogs, and cause some to change sexes. The herbicide is so dangerous that it has been effectively banned in 60 countries, including the European Union, since 2003.
Despite being banned in the EU, China-owned, Switzerland-based Syngenta produces atrazine in the EU and exports it to the United States so that Americans can be poisoned for profit. This must stop.

If RFK Jr is so concerned about water pollution, perhaps he might look at the stats about where it comes from.
RFK Jr: “Every child in this country has a right to go down to their local lake or river, throw in a plug, pull out a fish, and bring it home and feed it to their family with the security that they’re not poisoning somebody.”
RFK Jr. says our waterways belong to the PEOPLE, not chemical companies, fertilizer companies, or Big Ag.
“Waterways belong to all of us.”
“They don’t belong to the chemical companies, the fertilizer companies, Big Ag, or anybody else.”
“They’re part of what they call the public trust. And this is ancient law. It goes back 1,000 years to the Code of Justinian.”
“The air, the water, the wildlife, the wandering animals, the fisheries, the aquifers, they belong to all the people.”
“Everybody has a right to use them. Nobody can use them in a way that will diminish or injure their use and enjoyment by others.”
“When somebody pollutes waterways, they are stealing something that belongs to our public.”
“Those rights are being taken.”
Very cool, informative visual @AndyMasley . Would love to see the addition of a breakdown of what crops are consuming the most water. This is our estimate based on a few reports from long-time water researchers and USDA data.
Having Opus slowly build a giant interactive map of every way water's used in America. Will be updated regularly over the next week as it runs in the background andymasley.com/visuals/water…
Ironic that the EPA would find that the state wasn't cracking down on polluting factory farms when the EPA has done almost nothing in terms of regulation for the past 30 years.
More than a decade after the EPA found that Iowa wasn’t cracking down on polluting factory farms, the state continues to hedge on enforcement. @AnikaJaneBeamer reports for @insideclimate:

If you haven’t watched this yet please do.
I don’t care if you are Republican or Democrat, if this doesn’t move you to vote against the current state of affairs nothing will.
Our grandchildren will watch this clip in history class, to better understand the political climate during Trumpism.

Thank you for investigating this and thanks to the lawsuit. The EPA must be held accountable.
A new lawsuit alleges that U.S. regulators are illegally withholding records related to the disbandment of a panel set up to address factory farm pollution. Brian Bienkowski reports via @thenewledenews:

What a surprise. I thought Brooke Rollins said over a year ago that the USDA was going to eliminate HPAI with better biosecurity measures.

Maryland is facing a manure pollution problem, thanks to the factory farm industry. These farms are generating mass amounts of animal waste, causing air, soil, and water pollution.

Elevated cancer risks and the destruction of fish & wildlife in our nation's waterways.
Thank you @NickKristof for writing about a subject that few are willing to think about. And thanks to the undercover investigators who, along with journalists like you, are unwilling to let the issue stay hidden.
The meat industry tries very hard to keep cameras out of factory farms and slaughterhouses -- and a new undercover video shows why. Some day, our descendants will wonder about our collective blind spot to animal cruelty. A gift link to my column: nytimes.com/2026/10/17/opini…
Really important stuff. Thought I knew a lot about pesticides. But the corruption uncovered here, while not surprising, is staggering. Thank you @careygillam

EPA officials complain that they can't keep up with pesticide registration assessments because of having to deal with litigation. But so far, suing the agency is the only thing that gets it done.
The EPA has never set Clean Water Act standards for atrazine
Atrazine is the most widespread pesticide water contaminant in the US
We've just sued the EPA to get its act together and start doing its job

A new study found that climate, health, and animal welfare labels did little to influence what people ate. Instead, menu placement and presenting vegetarian food as the default can raise veg choices by up to 85%.
