A new scoring tool could complement BMI in identifying individuals with overweight or obesity who are at the highest risk for obesity-related complications and poor health outcomes, according to a study published in Nature Medicine. The tool, called OBSCORE, is an integrated model developed using interpretable machine learning that incorporates a range of health indicators to predict future risk for obesity-related conditions. The model may provide a framework for prioritizing high-risk individuals for earlier and more intensive interventions. mdsc.pe/4e9piXI

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) punch above their weight. Unlike long-chain fats that take a circuitous route, MCTs head straight from gut to the liver, rapidly fueling ketone production and improving glucose control, satiety, and energy metabolism—often with just 10–20 g/day. Emerging evidence also points to benefits for heart function, with effects varying by chain length. #Metabolism #Nutrition #CardiovascularHealth cell.com/trends/endocrinolog…

📢 New Research Alert: Does Baseline Cardiovascular Risk Influence the Benefit of LDL-C Lowering in Primary Prevention? A new systematic review and meta-analysis challenges conventional thinking about LDL-C lowering in primary prevention, demonstrating that the relative benefit of pharmacologic LDL-C reduction may actually be greater in lower-risk populations. Key findings: 🔹 Analysis of 17 randomized trials involving more than 105,000 participants found that the relative risk reduction (RRR) associated with each 1 mmol/L reduction in LDL-C was substantially greater in lower-risk populations than in higher-risk populations. 🔹 At an annual cardiovascular event rate of 1%, a 1 mmol/L LDL-C reduction was associated with an estimated 36% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events, compared with 13% at a 3% annual event rate. 🔹 Higher-risk populations required substantially larger absolute LDL-C reductions to achieve comparable relative benefits. 🔹 The findings support consideration of earlier LDL-C lowering strategies before cardiovascular risk becomes established. These results add to the growing body of evidence that cumulative LDL-C exposure matters—and that earlier intervention may yield meaningful long-term cardiovascular benefits. 📖 Read the article: sciencedirect.com/science/ar… #PreventiveCardiology #LDLCholesterol #PrimaryPrevention #ASCVD #LipidManagement #CardiovascularPrevention #CardiologyResearch #Cholesterol #HeartHealth #EvidenceBasedMedicine

Our paper in @IntJObesity showed the predictive validity of sarcopenic obesity based on Asian-specific JWGSO criteria. JWGSO-defined sarcopenic obesity was associated with poorer physical function, mobility limitations, and higher mortality risk.

When I exercise, my brain is not just helping my body move. It is actively strengthening my memory. This research shows that during and after about 20 minutes of cycling, the hippocampus becomes more active. The hippocampus is the brain structure that helps form and organize memories. Scientists recorded brain signals from this region and observed brief bursts of electrical activity called hippocampal ripples. These ripples last only milliseconds but they are critical for memory consolidation. This is the process where the brain stabilizes and stores information we have learned. The figure shows that ripple activity increases during exercise and stays elevated afterward. That means physical activity can stimulate the neural patterns that help the brain replay and reinforce experiences. In simple terms, when I move my body, I am also giving my brain a chance to strengthen the circuits that support learning and memory. Exercise not only trains muscles. It also activates the biological processes that help the brain remember.

🎉Excited to share our new research published in @Cell_Metabolism on the metabolic polygenic risk score To date, polygenic risk scores (PRS) have been developed and validated against single traits. In this study, we generated a PRS that captures metabolic dysfunction. Key take-aways: 👉 Biologically enriched Metabolic PRS was developed from GWAS of 20 metabolic traits 👉 Metabolic PRS demonstrated superior obesity & diabetes prediction across six ancestries 👉 Beyond predicting future risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, Metabolic PRS effectively identified individuals at high risk for metabolic multimorbidity, and even likelihood of requiring GLP-1 receptor agonist & bariatric surgery, which proxy the clinical severity of metabolic dysfunction Huge thanks to co-first Qiuli Chen & Yang Sui, and co-seniors @aklfahed, @patrick_ellinor, and Minxian Wang who made this project possible! Deep appreciation to every contributor who helped bring this together: @LuChenWeng, @somijemmacho, @skoyamamd, @pnatarajanmd, and many more!
