Comprehensive guide for guys over 40 (really could be younger also, but some of this info may not apply) to achieve the real ideal Dad BOD, Jacked and Tan. There is no magic secret here, but sometimes it helps just to have it all laid out.

A plan you can't/won't adhere to consistently is a suboptimal plan.

If a workout calls for 2 sets of 15, that means you have 2 βworkingβ sets of 15 reps.
If you hit 15 and you couldβve done 10 more, thatβs not a working set.
Thatβs a warm up set.
You shouldnβt be trying to rush through the sets as fast as possible.
Youβre leaving a ton of progress on the table by doing so.
Find a weight that makes you fail around that rep range, be controlled on the eccentric (lowering of the lift) and explosive on the concentric (lifting of the weight).
15 reps with a decent amount of weight is probably going to be tough.
Itβs supposed to be uncomfortable.
You have to give the muscles a reason to grow.

Halloween mode is being super glitchy. Wonβt allow βfright showβ on command but thankfully Iβd scheduled one that happened to start as soon as a little girl stepped onto our driveway. π»π

Daily proof of work.
Yes I do TRT. Im 59
No itβs not cheating.
It doesnβt got me out of bed at 0500.
Never cooked a meal.
Never did a single rep.
It helps me recover. It restored what time took.
The work was still mine.
What's the excuse you're still using?
I have never had someone come up to me in the gym after I have just completed a beautiful set with perfect form and say anything.
I have however, multiple times, had guys come up to me after I have horse cocked some heavy shit and given me the atta boy.
There is a lesson in there.
So one of the benefits of bulking i dont see discussed enough.
As you get thicker, its so much easier to get into Z2 for cardio.
Its almost like you are Rucking with a built in Meat Vest.
Damn all these fancy weighted vest, give me 5k calories and a little wiggle in the belly.

At Iron Ethos we understand that if you value time with family on Saturday and flourish with structured week days, a mid-week rest day with training on Saturday will never be the optimal plan for you, even if itβs the ideal plan in general.

I recently heard a quote by Alain de Botton:
βCompatibility is an achievement of love, it shouldnβt be its precondition.β And while much of his other content is a little too buzzkill on romance for my liking, I think thereβs something to this one. Iβve rolled it around in my mind the past couple of weeks.
The rumors are true, it was Ianβs grey hair which lured me in on Bumbleβ¦ but otherwise my first impression was idk he might be too normal for me (he had a corporate headshot as a pfp). Turns out heβs not so normal after all, but we are a great deal different from each other.
For our first date he took me to a kava bar because he thought thatβs something a hippie chic might enjoy. I was enamored by the perceptiveness and creativity. For our first Christmas together, he researched the meaning of crystals and bought me a beautiful thulite necklace. And still today heβs never going to start himself a crystal collection, but he loves that I collect them. He finds it adorable that when heβs gone on a business trip I have spent Friday night rearranging my fluorite.
You see, I think this is really the crux of it, the approach to differences which make them compatible. Have you noticed that when people speak about things they love they light up? They emanate vitality. Itβs beautiful. And you donβt have to be interested in the content, to be interested in the person and their love for the content. Over the years if you donβt listen to what gets them excited youβll see that light less and less.
So yeah the quote is about approaching challenging differences in ways that make them work, but I think itβs also about not trying to change whatβs unique about people, and loving that about them.

For years I was made to believe that carbs were the enemy. Not the case.
Carbs arenβt the enemy.
An unsustainable calorie deficit is.
These four are my go to:
- Potatoes
- Oats
- White Rice
- Berries.
Iβm consuming about 300 grams around training and feel great. Training intensity is high. Energy and focus are improved.
Iβll keep reporting results. I hope to lean out and add some mass in the next few months.
Donβt skip the carbs. Especially after 50, when recovery is slower.

At 42 I thought I was seriously ill.
My energy was gone. My stamina was gone. Drive, libido, the spark that used to get me off the couch. All of it running on empty.
I'd been a cop and an investigator my whole life. I always lifted. Always ran. Always tried to eat fairly clean. So I figured something was seriously wrong.
So I went to see my doctor expecting working really bad.
The bloodwork came back. Testosterone: 200 ng/dL.
My doctor was really good especially for that time period. Doctors grade testosterone against a normal band for your age. I was below even that.
I did some research on this for my first book, Forged After 50. Itβs not just my story.
A study of 2,121 male law enforcement officers found 38% had testosterone under 300. Average age 47.
A VA study of veterans over 60 found 34% had low total testosterone. Muck worse than their civilian peers.
And shift workers who can't sleep run about 100 points lower than guys who can.
Think about what the job does to a man.
Night shifts that wreck your sleep.
Adrenaline dumps, then the crash.
Gas station dinners at 3am.
Court on your day off.
Years of carrying what you saw home with you. Stress. Stress and more stress.
Your body keeps score.
Low T means more belly fat. Less muscle. Less drive. Flat mood. Slower recovery. Poor sleep that makes it all worse.
Then we look at the out-of-shape cop and call him lazy.
He's not lazy. He's depleted.
Here's what I learned.
TRT is not a shortcut. It does not replace training, nutrition, sleep, or discipline. It supports a man already doing those things.
I got my levels fixed in my early 40s and felt better than I had in years. Then over the next 10 years I let my diet slip. Business stress. Raising sons. Leading a family. By my early 50s my testosterone was right where it needed to be.
I wasn't.
The hormone was doing its job. I'd stopped doing mine.
So if you work hard and are under stress. And letβs face it, what man carrying a business or a career or a family that relies on his isnβt?
Get your bloodwork. Total and free testosterone, not just one number.
Find a doctor who wants you performing your best, not one who just wants you inside an age average. The number that works, is the number that works for you. Youβll know it when you hit it.
Donβt forget that you still need to do the work. Same if you add a GLP to help take off some of that body fat. Lift. Sleep. Eat a balanced diet. Walk.
It took me about a year with my doctor to find the dose where my mind and body ran at their best. I've held it there for over 15 years.
The gift isn't the pump in the gym. It's waking up clear and wanting to train.
The guys who protected everyone else deserve someone looking out for them too.
From my book, Forged After 50.
Not medical advice. Talk to your doctor.
Work. Sweat. Build.
You have to earn the right to take it to the next level. If you are not executing currently with what you have programmed, increasing anything will only create a negative response. More Steps, Less Food, More Food, Higher Volume, Higher AAS......all of these things come with a cost. The cost is your ability to adequately recover and actually build new tissue.
Your body doesnβt care how βbad you want itβ or how fast you want to move. It only knows......are you giving me the proper environment in which it is safe/necessary to build more tissue? Creating that environment is what a proper training program consist of.
You can build a pretty solid physique bulldozing your way through. At some point you will hit a wall, and progress will stop. This is the point itβs time to evaluate things. If this is you, give @ironethosx a shout. Let us help you take it to the next level. When you put all the pieces together it truly is amazing what is possible, and itβs usually very simple adjustments. Letβs get a jump start on making your 2027 body the one you have envisioned.
