In our neighborhood, there’s one other family with small kids besides us. Everyone else is older with adult kids. Since we’re out of the way, there are no trick or treaters. So when my wife asked in the gc if anyone wanted Halloween visitors, it was a chorus of, “Yes, please!”

This is my semi-regular reminder that visiting old folks with your kids and babies is good for them, good for your children, and good for you

Halloween party with the family. Did some drive by trick or treating because we’re out in the sticks and the homes are too far apart. Deep fried rockfish bites from a fish that was caught this morning. Can’t beat it.

I’ve got nothing against Marty, but I’d like to push back on “meat” as a defense for hunting It’s a weak argument because if the goal is just meat, the time and money invested in hunting can easily get you meat We use meat as a cover for the real reason we hunt: we love it

In other words, if you took the monetary equivalent of all the gear, guns, ammo, clothing, stands, etc PLUS your time, it’d net you a ton of meat Another thought: if someone dropped off a couple dead deer at your house, would you skip the rest of the season? Probably not.

So we’re not after meat, and it’s disingenuous to say so We hunt because we’re after an experience, and that’s a better argument against the anti-hunters

The actual doing is more important than what you personally believe about it Stop sowing division
Catholics believe that the Eucharist is truly the body and blood of Jesus Christ. How stupid and idolatrous.

And the Founding fathers killed 90 million native Americans. By purposely infecting them with smallpox. So I don’t wanna hear about “oh Washington only had 300 slaves.” The founding fathers were bigger mass murderers than Hitler.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Dobyns' 90M figure was a disputed high estimate for the entire pre-1492 Americas (mostly south of US); North America estimates ~2-7M. Sole documented smallpox blankets case was by British in 1763, before US independence. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populatio… history.com/articles/colon… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_…

BREAKING: Rumors of a great time have been confirmed
BREAKING: I just spoke with a government insider. You need to get off the internet, have some friends over, drink beer & whiskey w/ the boys, watch sportsball, & let the women & children play. Things will never be the same.

Twice in the last 5 or so years, I have gotten into conversations with coworkers who have learned that I am pretty right wing and a christian. They are usually surprised because I joke around and swear a lot, which maybe I should work on, but thats not the point here. What happens is that we start talking about it, and in both cases, the coworkers were either atheist or vaguely agnostic. They start interrogating me from the classic George Carlin/reddit atheist stance. Its exhausting. But what I find is that when I turn it back to them and ask them what they believe in, they don't have an answer. They do the meme. "Be a heckin good person" is essentially what they say. They've sincerely never thought about it. They don't really have a belief system beyond rational self-interest. They are floating through life like this. They don't feel the need to construct or deconstruct a belief system. They are content to carry out the programming they have absorbed without much question. They always claim to be political centrists and make sure to point out that they want fiscal responsibility (they never have any idea what this would look like or take and constantly vote for people who don't hide their intentions to spend wildly). On the religious side, I will start to ask them philosophical and theological questions, to which they seem to not even understand. They think its weird to even think about or discuss these things. They may have learned about Aristotle but only in a biographical sort of way. They've ever actually had discourse or been challenged about this stuff. As eigenrobot says. They don't have any beliefs to interrogate. These people could be conditioned to consent to mass killings with 2 years or less of really good propaganda
one reason ive become less interesting is that people no longer pretend to believe in things and so there are no beliefs to interrogate most politics is explicitly schmittian now and no one is even bothering with the window dressing. people just want to kill each other

There’s a war going in the backyard, a hawk is involved, the grackles are grackling, and the squirrels are raising a ruckus I can’t reasonably be expected to pay attention to his lame-ass slide deck

To clarify: I have deep respect for the Catholic and Orthodox churches But I can’t stand the snobbery towards Protestants (usually Americans btw) For every heretical mega church, there’s a dozen small churches meeting where they can with whatever funds they can scrape together
Pastor Bob’s mall church is meeting people at their lowest and offering hope and salvation Unlike online trad-cath snobs

To expand on my respected mutual’s point Just because you’re a man doesn’t mean you don’t need friends You need friends (and not just your wife’s friend’s husbands) Go make them
I'm sorry but this is so fucking lame. Your grandparents partied. Your grandparents hosted, they went to bars, they did shit. They didnt sit around and pride themselves for spending all of their free time staring at their children and mowing the lawn. Get the fuck out of your house. Take your wife out for a drink and listen to some live music. Have a conversation with someone at the bar. Go to a hockey game with your college buddies. Youre not somehow more mature for being homebound. Get a life.

Dressing up as a cowboy for Halloween, my daughter is going as Jessie from Toy Story. The boy is Buzz Lightyear. Baby is an alien, and my wife is The Claw. I put on my outfit and I have to (sadly) agree with my wife: a Latino man in a cowboy hat automatically looks Mexican
