EXCLUSIVE: Reform-led Leicestershire County Council is exploring a deal with the Liberal Democrats to remain in power.
At tonight’s Reform UK group meeting - the first since leader Dan Harrison resigned following my report on his comments about staff redundancies - acting council leader Kevin Crook told colleagues he is "extremely" concerned that the opposition will vote them out in December. He said that, in order to retain control of the council, Reform is prepared to offer the Liberal Democrats cabinet positions and the deputy leader role.
Such an arrangement would mark the first coalition between Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats anywhere in the country. It remains unclear whether the party’s national leadership would approve the deal, and local Liberal Democrats have not yet indicated whether they would accept it.
I was also told that the meeting was heated, with frequent swearing and "passionate" speeches. One councillor warned the group that they would consider defecting to Restore Britain if the party failed to resolve its internal issues.
Dan Harrison did not attend the meeting.
