The poles are warming at record speed, but are drastic technological “fixes” the answer?
Article authors, including Martin Siegert and @HeidiSevestre, say the real safeguard is immediate, deep decarbonization.

#Geoengineering is not the way to address #climatechange in the polar regions.
Our review of 5 prominent polar geoengineering ideas concludes that none are viable. Instead, they are environmentally dangerous and have major governance & ethics issues

Winter #snow measurements on #glaciers for 2025 in the frame of @glamos_ch are completed. Read our report on the results 👇
There's a 13% glacier snow deficit Swiss-wide, with strong spatial variability though. Another difficult year for glaciers ahead...

Since 1976, Earth's glaciers have lost 9000 billion tonnes of water, contributing 25 mm to global sea-level rise
Over 40 % of this loss has happened in the last decade... and 6 % occurred in 2023 alone in a record-shattering year of glacier ice loss

NSIDC announce a downgrading of service level for their sea ice index dataset which may mean no further updates.
These are globally important datasets for monitoring the ongoing changes to the climate. This is horribly damaging for global science.

Icebergs? The size of a city? 90 miles from the UK? Must be a joke, right?
No! Our new paper in @natcomms.nature.com shows massive tabular icebergs broke off the UK in the last ice age before the UK’s ice shelves disintegrated from climate warming.
