Governor George Natembeya has faced relentless pressure from President William Ruto’s administration, largely because of his push for Luhya unity and his public support for Edwin Sifuna. He was arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, his home was raided, and some of his property was seized. A court later cleared him of any wrongdoing. On three separate occasions, the national government has withdrawn his security, leaving him exposed. During the Malava by-election he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt, and in Homa Bay his personal assistant’s car was torched by individuals allegedly linked to the government. Efforts to impeach him collapsed, and repeated court orders intended to frustrate service delivery in Trans-Nzoia County have failed to stop him. Despite these obstacles, Natembeya has continued to deliver for the people who elected him. A leader chosen by the people is not easily broken.
